Hiring managers: Try not to look for someone who is 100% or overqualified for the job you’re looking to fill. If you do this, you’re missing out on a lot of great talent. Instead, hire someone with the drive to learn, truly grow in the role, and make it their own. They’re more likely to be and stay engaged long-term. Really prioritize hiring someone who can add value to the role, the work, your team, and your organization through their unique passions, point of view, and lived experiences. I've been a hiring manager for over 10 years. I've hired various marketers, from brand managers and digital managers to product leaders. At first, I felt unprofessional when I saw the complex cases my colleagues gave candidates. Those cases had many calculations—distribution, pricing, etc. I wondered if I was missing something. But then, I noticed my team delivering great results month after month. Despite many challenges. People got promoted and stayed with the company. So, I realized my hiring approach isn't bad after all. Here are the key questions I use when hiring: 1️⃣ Tell me about your favorite project. What makes it special for you? This question helps me see if their values and knowledge align with ours. The project they choose and how they describe it can be very telling. 2️⃣ How would you handle a specific marketing activity, and why?   ➡️ For example, imagine you need to launch a new baby food product from a factory in South Africa. Explain your steps. I want to understand their logic. If the logic is sound, other skills and insights can be learned on the job. 3️⃣ What’s your favorite activity in marketing, and why? This shows what they find fascinating in their work and gives valuable insights into their strengths and talents. Last but not least, I did my best not to hire "mini-me".
