Sea cruises are not the type of holiday experience most people would normally associate with adventure tourism, and CERTAINLY not with any notion of sustainability. However, there is a growing number of cruise companies offering small ship cruises, complete with activities such as sea kayaking, swimming with sea turtles, even swimming in the sea itself; or onshore hikes, mountain bike trail rides, as well as the more conventional cultural experiences. Say goodbye to jam-packed travel itineraries and hello to the art of doing nothing. In a recent Wall Street Journal article, Allison Pohle and Rachel Wolfe explore the rise of “do-nothing” vacations where travellers trade adrenaline for serenity – where vacations offer bliss devoid of schedules and decision-fatigue. According to the Tourism Industry Association of Canada's recent survey of Canadian domestic travel consumers conducted by Skift Advisory, Canadians have been choosing relaxation and spending time with family as their top reason for travel (36% of respondents) compared to doing an adventure or other outdoor activity which represented only 6% of respondent’s primary reason for travel.
