🚢🌊 Exciting Advances in Marine Coatings and Sustainability! 🌿✨ Having previously worked at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden on the environmental impact of antifouling technologies (a hat-tip to Philip Chaabane and Emiliano Pinori), I often find myself diving into the latest innovations in this field. One such innovation that caught my eye is Hempel A/S’s high-performance marine coating solution, Hempaguard (see: https://lnkd.in/dsqvFmfP ) Hempaguard, including the advanced Hempaguard X7, offers remarkable fuel savings of up to 20%, accelerating decarbonization efforts in the maritime industry. This silicone-based hull coating, powered by ActiGuard technology, combines advanced hydrogel silicone with an efficient fouling-preventing biocide, prolonging the fouling-free period and boosting the antifouling barrier. Launched in 2013, Hempaguard has revolutionized energy efficiency for vessels worldwide, significantly reducing carbon emissions. The recent third-party validation by DNV - my former employer - objectively confirms its outstanding performance, including up to 20% fuel savings and an average speed loss of only 1.4% (see: https://lnkd.in/dNqrexsQ ). The repercussions of this action are heart-wrenching, as each boat alone releases around 5.6 million microplastics into the ocean every year. ONE OF THE WORLD’S LARGEST #PFAS PROCESSING PLANTS TO BE COMMISSIONED THIS WEEK   What’s the collective noun for a group of #SAFF® units? A pack of SAFF’s? A herd?   It doesn’t really matter but the Crystal Clean and EPOC Enviro teams proudly put the finishing touches this week on a quadruple #SAFF40® system at a confidential client’s site in the northern states of the US. Located on a large industrial facility, and designed to treat up to one million gallons of PFAS impacted water per day, this system will be, as far as we are aware, one of the largest foam fractionation plants operating anywhere in the world at the current time.   Running largely unmanned around the clock, these SAFF40® units will treat stockpiles of PFAS impacted event and site waters and reduce it down to a few gallons a day of hyper-concentrated PFAS liquor, ready for offsite destruction. SAFF® achieves all this by harnessing the unique power of rising air bubbles to mop up and remove PFAS compounds. NSF Biodiversity on a Changing Planet (BoCP) Program - Due 09/05/24 Opportunity Title: Biodiversity on a Changing Planet (BoCP)   Funder/Agency: National Science Foundation (NSF)   Opportunity Number: 24-574   Description: The program encourages proposals that integrate ecological and evolutionary approaches in the context of the continual gain, loss, and reorganization of biodiversity on a changing planet. To advance a comprehensive understanding of functional biodiversity requires a highly integrative approach – including consideration of spatial and temporal dimensions from the organismal to the ecosystem level, and from recent to deep timescales. The BoCP program is a cross-directorate and international program led by NSF that invites submission of interdisciplinary proposals addressing grand challenges in biodiversity science within the context of unprecedented environmental change, including climate change. Successful BoCP proposals will test novel hypotheses about functional biodiversity and its connections to shifting biodiversity on a changing planet, with respect to both how environmental change affects taxonomic and functional biodiversity, as well as how the resulting functional biodiversity across lineages feeds back on the environment.
