Last year we started something frightening but also super awesome. We expanded our team. It's an incredible feeling to see more and more people joining Twentynine behind the scenes, working on some truly exciting design, photo and video projects. But let me tell you, finding passionate individuals who truly care about attention to detail? It's no walk in the park. We've jumped on endless conversations, hoping to find the perfect fit. Yet, it's surprising how many folks nowadays are more focused on the paycheck than the experience. I mean, I started my journey into photography through an internship that was completely unpaid. Why? Because I understood the value of gaining experience, building networks, and honing my skills. But nowadays, it seems like some people are all about the money and not about what they bring to the table. (Reposting this due to technical issues) On the week of 2/5 - 2/9 for my internship at the City of Wentzville, I got to create a design for the Friday Shift T-Shirts (shown below) using Canva. I wanted it to stand out from designs seen previously, so it did take me the first few days to brainstorm and settle on one. After receiving feedback on it, I had to make some adjustments including: - Changing the font color - Centering the state icon - Stretching the text closer to the edges of the circle. #tshirtdesign #graphicdesign #repost #recappost

🥳Week 3 of my apprenticeship with BRIDGEGOOD complete! Wow, the time has flown by so quickly and we’ve learned so much. According to the concept of the “12-week year”, we are now relatively in the month of April in regard to our total time in the program! ⏳ 🧩This week was all about comprehending the concepts of user experiences and designing with human-centered perspectives. We learned all about personas paired with a hands-on demo from Alex Rojo (Adobe Experience Designer) utilizing Photoshop to create our own persona. This concept paved the way for us to get started on our capstone project in partnership with the Google #TechEquityCollective where we will analyze the professional and educational experiences of bipoc with an emphasis on Black Creatives who are navigating a career in the Tech industry. Per my previous post, we’ve been conducting research through 1:1 interviews to gain an understanding of the “happy journey” and what resources/environments would support diversity in the field. Moreover, I had the honor to speak with Sonali Sharma (Adobe design intern), Aretha September (San Jose City College recent grad), and Kyle Rush (Stanford Health Care designer) who all had such rich and differing experiences to share. It was such a pleasure connecting with Sonali and Aretha as they have previously participated in BG and are now paving their way into their careers, it almost felt like I was speaking with my future self. Moreover, Kyle shared tremendous insights about his holistic educational experience and even shared some great ideas to contribute to our product design. Additionally, this week I was so excited to watch the premier of Pixar Animation Studios #InsideOut2 💛! Throughout my childhood I’ve been mesmerized through the power of storytelling paired with engaging visuals in animated films. I am always going through a roller coaster of emotions in theaters, and this movie was no exception. The film followed a coming of age story where the main character Riley experiences more complex emotions as she grew older. Something I resonated tremendously with was how every persons’ emotions were structured differently based on their core memories and past experiences. This truly embodied my professional takeaways this week as we further analyzed how everyone’s unique experiences contribute to their diverse perspectives and thus generates valuable and culturally rich insights to share. Further, it strengthened my undergraduate understanding of psychological processes and human development. ⬆️Upskilling: -Uriel Zarate explained some great strategies in product design using Figma ! -Kelly Weldon demonstrated an Adobe illustrator tutorial.. this was the hardest tool to grasp for me but I think I’ve got the core concepts down! I landed my dream internship 21 years ago 🙌 Then I realized that I was dreaming the wrong dream! 😳 We give a lot of praise to the people who take a chance on us that ultimately pays off, but the real heroes are the ones who believed in us even when it didn’t work out. I discovered my "dream job" in middle school after watching the movie Toy Story. The emotion, the storytelling, and the cutting-edge graphics technology completely floored me. In that moment, I knew I had to work at Pixar. Fast forward to college—I enrolled in computer science at UC San Diego, home to one of the best graphics programs in the country. Senior year, I landed a spot in Professor Mike Bailey's highly coveted graphics course. He was known for giving internships to his top students, and I worked my ass off to get my first (and only) A+ of college. And it paid off! I was invited to intern with Professor Bailey at the San Diego Supercomputer Center—a huge step toward my Pixar career. For months, I spent my time in a cold, dark room, surrounded by humming supercomputers. By the end, I had 90 seconds of footage of a teapot that looked like it was made of bricks. It was... underwhelming. I asked Professor Mike Bailey, "Is this what working at Pixar is like? When does all the fun design and storytelling happen?" He laughed and said, "Oh, that’s for the animators and writers—not for computer scientists!" That’s when it hit me. Just because Pixar makes incredible films blending technology and storytelling, doesn’t mean that’s the job for everyone working there. Eventually, I found my true calling in Product Management—a perfect balance of both worlds. But without Professor Bailey’s belief in me, I might have spent years pursuing the wrong dream. So, here’s to the Professor Baileys out there—the ones who believe in us even when things don’t go as we expected. Sometimes those are the most valuable lessons! 🙏 -------------------------- I'm commemorating my 20th yeah in my ACTUAL career, but thanking 365 people who helped me along the way. Heck, you might even know someone in the industry. Actually, about that... My son, Ben, is about to be a rising college junior and is studying to get a degree in Game Design at RIT. RIT requires each student to complete two paid co-ops to graduate and like thousands of other students, Ben is currently searching for his first co-op this summer. Except...there don't seem to be a ton of co-ops to go around. SO...If you know of anyone in the field of game design OR if you know of a company in the greater Boston or greater Rochester area offering co-ops in computer programming or software development, please reach out! Ben is a truly great kid...really smart (he's got a 3.9), and a hard worker, but also very sociable and outgoing - a bit of a unicorn when it comes to coders. 📸✨ Work isn’t working when you’re having fun with a team you rock and shine with ✨ When the pandemic hit, it hit event photographers hard. Budgets shrunk, gigs dried up, and suddenly, I couldn’t afford the awesome crew I once had. I missed the thrill, their vibe, their hustle, and those epic shots we’d nail together. So, I flipped the script and decided to invest in people. Started up a paid internship, handpicked some cool folks I connected with, and started sharing my wisdom. It was more than just snapping pics; it was about boosting confidence, showing love to them and my customers, and passing on everything I’ve learned to the best of my ability. Truth is, while I was teaching, I was relearning too. Photography is more than just technical skills; it’s about building a community, fostering talent, and changing the game from cutthroat to collaborative. Now, standing here with these beautiful women that I continue to help mold, I know that photography doesn’t have to be a solo journey. This ride taught me the power of teamwork, the joy of lifting others, and the incredible growth that comes from sharing knowledge. We’re on this path together, watching our artistry bloom within our circle. This journey proves that challenges aren’t roadblocks; they’re turns toward new opportunities. I gained not only a team but a family bonded by our love for photography. Here’s to not making excuses, breaking barriers, growing stronger together, and rewriting the rules. TGIF session one at 10kdesigners 🙌🏼 And what better way to actually follow advice than by putting it into practise, so here are a few takeaways and well- a tiny step towards a long term progress :) 1. Be honest, if you do not understand, ask questions. 🗣️ Throughout my journey of talking to stakeholders, teammates and peers through internships and projects, I had been terrified of being slow to understand, often being afraid to ask questions. Maybe if I would've just asked a simple question, my endless days of worrying and scrambling would've gone by :) Nobody, and really nobody is going to judge you for answering questions. 2.  To become a better designer you need to put in the design reps. 💪🏼 and basically, put in thousands of repetitions. Nobody suddenly made a landing page or an app really amazing in the first go. Its super easy to forget that people who come up with really good design solutions have probably been doing the same thing over and over again for a long time! 3. Embrace the Uncertainty. 🌤️ Everyone is still figuring it out day by day. More often than not plans change unexpectedly, sometimes leading you to a completely new setting. Im 20 and i don't have it all figured out. Someone out there is 50 with a plethora of experience and they too don't have it all figured out. Existential crisis knocks by easier than you think it does - "oh they have it all planned! Life toh set hai inki!" None of us have it planned end to end. So its not the end of the world.
