Thrilled that the first paper led by my first U-M PhD student, the stellar Claire McKenna, and with Carina Gronlund, is now out in Resources, Conservation & Recycling. From energy audits, utility bill analysis, thermostat data analysis, and interviews with 51 homeowners in Wayne and Washtenaw Counties, we find: 1. A switch to heat pumps from natural gas will raise energy burdens sharply for all participants. This will be particularly acute for low-income households. This is a function of the cold climate, poor housing stock (more below), and the relative prices of natural gas and electricity. In the figure below, (1) is for standard flat electricity rate and 2022 natural gas cost; and (2) is for standard time-of-use electricity rate and 2022 natural gas cost. Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/gdrAEDkX CRUCIAL POINT: this is not an argument against electrification, which is essential. It is an argument for standards and help to make our housing stock more efficient and for closer scrutiny of utility rates.

Affordable energy is a civil rights issue and must be addressed in our energy policy discussions. At the 2024 National Action Network Convention, Rev. Dr. Malcolm T. Byrd, Chief Operating Officer of the National Action Network and Senior Pastor at Mother AME Zion Church in Harlem, New York, shared that his church spends $5,000-$6,000 every 2 weeks on heating oil – taking away vital funds that could be devoted towards community development. We must ensure that America’s energy policies do not sacrifice reliability or affordability for families and businesses across the United States. Learn how natural gas, partnered with renewables, is a pragmatic energy strategy that can move all communities forward: https://lnkd.in/deTAjieA
