Came across this thread yesterday and it hit home. Not because I think there is anything wrong with being multifaceted, though. To the contrary, I think it’s the evolving nature of work, technology and creativity that people today can add all of these skill sets to their toolbox (sounds cliche but I can’t think of a better analogy). The analogy that hiring a designer and asking of them some print, digital, brand, marketing, and all the rest (experience) is the like hiring a carpenter to re-wire your house isn’t a great one though. What do you think? Is having experience in a bunch of somewhat related areas a bad thing to want if you are hiring someone?

5 things I found about hiring top designers: ❌ They need to be the "best" designer in the room ✅ They understand shipping product is a team game ❌ They sit in their ivory tower and demand respect ✅ They can flip conversations to demonstrate ROI ❌ Struggle to align design success to how the biz views success. ✅ Strong business literacy + can prove how design influences. ❌ They have an updated portfolio, always. ✅ They show shipped work, raw files etc. ❌ They conform, are passive, and embrace uniformity. ✅ They embrace who they are, unapologetically. The best people I've hired remain loyal to their personal beliefs and get inspiration from multiple areas of their life and work. What would you say are the traits of the top designers? In design, there is no universal standard for defining a designer’s experience or expertise. However, common titles exist to describe different levels of designers, which can vary between organizations and industries. JUNIOR / ENTRY-LEVEL DESIGNER — THE LEARNING PHASE - Typically refers to designers who are new to the field or have limited professional experience. - They may still be developing their skills & require guidance and mentorship. - First 2 to 4 years experience. MID-LEVEL / MID-WEIGHT DESIGNER — THE PRACTICING PHASE - They have gained some experience & expertise in their field. - They have a solid foundation of skills & are capable of working on projects independently with some level of creative input. - 3 to 6 years experience. SENIOR DESIGNER — THE LEADING PHASE - They have a significant amount of experience and expertise in their area of specialization. - They often take on more complex projects, lead design teams, & provide guidance & mentorship to junior designers. - 7-10 years experience. ART / CREATIVE DIRECTOR — THE DIRECTING PHASE - These are higher-level positions that involve overseeing & managing the creative direction & design strategy of a project or organization. - They are responsible for guiding the overall vision & ensuring the quality of the design work. - 10+ years experience. It's a game of patience, precision and the ability to identify potential in the most unusual places. The pain points? They're plentiful. The first hurdle is the sheer volume of talent. With countless portfolios that sparkle with creativity, how do you determine who will fit your unique company culture and project needs? Next, there's the experience factor. Often, you'll find individuals with a wealth of experience but lacking the innovative spark, or vice versa. Tactical design is to help with implementation. Strategic design is to help with vision and prospecting opportunities. - If you're growing at tactical: you're a junior designer. - If you're growing at tactical and growing at strategic: you're a mid-level designer. - If you're good at tactical and growing at strategic: you're on the verge of design seniority. - If you're good at tactical and good at strategic: you're a senior designer. - If you're "growing" at tactical and “good” at strategic: you're a charlatan. Also, “senior” is a vast band that contains all those fancy titles you see, like staff, lead, principal, etc. Those role names are just altitudes that represent two things: 1) Your compensation. 2) The blast radius of your senior contributions (your influence span).
