"Don't use a five-dollar word when a fifty-cent word will do." Mark Twain The trick is knowing *when* the 50 cent word will do, and that's more complicated than it seems. It's all about your audience, and what they need. Does your audience need to know that you understand the $5 word? Or is it more important for them to understand what you're saying? Even if you feel pretty sure you know the answers, it's worth working with a data-driven content strategist to find out for sure. Jargon conveys a specific message, but clear language is often the better choice. Using the best language to talk to your audience might be the difference between hitting or missing your business goals. How do you know which is best for your purpose? Here are some things you can do to find out: 🆎 A/B testing - It's not just for email subject lines! You can try two versions of the same article—one written in industry jargon and one written in plain language. 📮 surveys or polls - Directly asking your audience questions provides invaluable information, and, if you do it right it can be fun, too. ✅ analyze your existing data - Your existing data is a goldmine of information about what your audience likes. By delving into your website analytics, you can see what types of content get the most traction.

🌟 #ThrowbackThursday Earlier this month, Lauren Yaxley delivered a presentation on "How to Nail Your Newsletter" to a welcoming bunch at a Buy Local Norfolk event. One of the standout takeaways was the crucial role of monitoring newsletter platform reports to measure performance. Metrics like open rate, click-through rate, unsubscribe rate, and bounce rate offer invaluable insights. 📊 At LY Copywriting, we go above and beyond to write compelling newsletters that people want to open, read and share. We're thrilled to share some of our recent wins: 🔹 In the financial sector, one of our clients' newsletters boasts an impressive average open rate of 46.95%, more than twice the industry average of 21.56%, according to Mailchimp statistics. 🔹 For our client in the manufacturing industry, their newsletters are achieving an average open rate of 39.6%, well above the industry benchmark of 19.82%. It's exciting to see our tailored approach resonate so strongly in this sector. 🔹 And let's not forget our very own LYft newsletter! With an average open rate of 42.37%, we're soaring above the creative agency industry average of 21.39%. This success reinforces our belief in the power of creative, relevant content. These results not only reflect our team's hard work but also the importance of continuous learning and adapting. A big thank you to our fantastic clients for trusting us with their newsletters. #NewsletterSuccess #ClientWins #EmailMarketing #ContinuousLearning #ContentMarketingAgency

I 2xed the opt-in rates on a newsletter landing page as a favor to my trainer over the past 30 days. Here's how I did it. First, I made basic upgrades to the creatives, most copywriters don't even bother with this but it's super important that the creative is simple yet elegant. Next, I boosted the perceived value of his newsletter by naming a dollar amount to the content they would receive on the first day,(in this case it was a free meal prep guide). **$200 worth of meal prep guides, absolutely free with your subscription.** Then, to increase open rates, I removed friction by getting rid of the "confirm your subscription email". If your lead gives you their name and email on your page, they absolutely consent to you sending them emails.

For the last 2 days I was stuck in the "spin cycle" creating the next MKT1 Newsletter. I followed my usual process: 1. Find a topic with a unique take 2. Create a very basic outline 3. Create draft diagrams to help me establish the flow and outline (yes, I make diagrams before writing) 3. Write a draft around diagrams 4. Create more, better, updated diagrams--maximize the neon colors 5. Re-order draft, move things around, hope for the best 6. Freak out that this newsletter is my worst ever and call Kathleen Estreich and other marketing friends. 7. Re-order content again so it really flows 8. Finish a draft, get edits, finalize. 9. Spend way too long staging it in Substack But this week I got very, very stuck in steps 4-6. I thought I'd lost my newsletter mojo. And then I went out and played skee ball with some ex-Asana marketers (Jenny Thai, Emilie Grace Cole, Reigan Combs) as I do every Tuesday—I'm terrible at skee ball btw. I woke up this morning, and got rolling on the newsletter right away. The fresh start made everything clear. What's the lesson here? I really don't know. But I have a newsletter coming out tomorrow, and I want to say that here, so I don't fall back into the spin cycle! ⬇ What's your best advice for getting out of the content creation spin cycle? 🖼 Should I have added an image of me in a washing machine to this post?
