The historic nature of our main streets is often overlooked and underutilized in the realm of economic development, particularly within the municipal planning world. Historic preservation planning can be a game changer to invigorate rural downtowns and small business communities. And contrary to popular belief, historic preservation planning doesn't mean major restrictions on property redevelopment, down to the paint color of trim. What it is is the creation of a flexible plan to fit the needs of your community, a plan that creates a commitment and belief in the importance of maintaining the character of your community. #mainstreetmatters #downtownplanning #historicpreservation #adaptivereuse #heritagetourism #economicdevelopment #planningiscool

E&E/GreenWire recently covered our The Mountain Pact report - "President Joe Biden should use his fourth year in office to designate six national monuments in five states, as well as expand two existing ones in California, urges a report from a group that works with Western community leaders on climate and public lands issues... 'Protective outcomes achieved under the Antiquities Act can ensure more equitable access to nature; address the climate crisis; restore America’s biodiversity and wildlife; and begin to reckon with historic and present injustices,' the report says. 'Through the use of the Antiquities Act, some of the most important resources in our nation are preserved for the betterment of all. These are among the many reasons that our work concentrates on encouraging greater use of the Antiquities Act.'" https://lnkd.in/dmkFDTFs

𝐌𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐒𝐥𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 ~ 𝐌𝐀𝐈𝐒 The National Trust for Historic Preservation has provided a grant to NBU (from the National Trust Preservation Fund) to document historic sites linked with Indigenous/Native American slavery. The funding will complement support from the Mellon Foundation. The larger scope of the project is hemispheric, but "Mapping the Architecture of Indigenous Slavery" will focus on New Mexico as a prototype for national and intercontinental expansion. According to Dr. Rael-Gálvez, “Our goal with MAIS is to identify and illuminate sites where the the Indigenous enslaved labored, lived, and even loved, but certainly left a legacy. However, it is a legacy that remains to this day invisible to the general public. The enslaved were the ones that cleared the fields, dug the ditches, and made countless bricks, bricks of mud that became homes, churches, and whole plazas. These building were not only made by them, but maintained by their hands."
