BREAKING NEWS! 🔥Things are heating up on Challenge.gov! The National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS) “Heat Tabletop Exercise Planning Challenge” is now open! NIHHS (Heat.gov) and NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s Regional Collaboration Network (RCN) invite local governments, in close collaboration with community leaders and organizations, to develop Heat Tabletop Exercise Situation Manuals, complete with realistic extreme heat scenarios and action plans. Extreme heat is one of the leading causes of weather-related illness and death in the U.S., and rising temperatures in recent decades have impacted livelihoods and infrastructure. This important #PrizeChallenge aims to understand exposure to heat impacts, identify who is most at risk, and explore actions to reduce risk. Beryl, eh? How about that crazy rapid intensification and its resultant intensity? Crazy for the time of year? Yes! Crazy in the context of the underlying sea warmth? Not so much. Sea temperatures over the region it exploded were more typical of Aug-Oct there: indeed only exceeded in about 8 years since 1981 in Aug-Oct (seen by the red rectangle extending the SSTs from the time of rapid intensification of Beryl across the rest of the year). Yes, you need a system in the first place to have something that can be a threat, plus other things in place to ensure rapid intensification once the SSTs are there, but it's maybe less surprising it went bang given these more peak-season-like SSTs. Yes it's one data-point but yet another data point in recent years towards the thinking that things could be changing in front of our eyes.

The extreme heat event will shift to the Midwest and to the East Coast - and continue through Friday. What will the impact be on the most vulnerable, especially those in the midst of urban centers with no escape from the heat/humidity. What about healthcare and EMS systems? Will they be overwhelmed? This event will impact a huge swath of geography. Will critical infrastructure be able to handle the additional strains on capacity? What happens in the event of a widespread or prolonged power failure? Do you have a heat emergency plan ready ? A very interesting resource: "The NWS HeatRisk is an experimental color-numeric-based index that provides a forecast risk of heat-related impacts to occur over a 24-hour period. HeatRisk takes into consideration: How unusual the heat is for the time of the year The duration of the heat including both daytime and nighttime temperatures If those temperatures pose an elevated risk of heat-related impacts based on data from the CDC This index is supplementary to official NWS heat products and is meant to provide risk guidance for those decision makers and heat-sensitive populations who need to take actions at levels that may be below current NWS heat product levels. Great share Hal N.. Extreme Heat is an insidious climate threat that contributes to significant social impacts. First and foremost is the direct human impact, especially at-risk populations. Then comes the secondary impact which can contribute to social consequences by overwhelmed or failed critical infrastructure leading to disruption of essential energy and water utility services, the burdening of already challenged EMS and healthcare systems, and much more. Hal asks in his post “Do you have a heat emergency plan ready?” Heat Emergency Plans are not just the domain of public sector emergency management and public health agencies. Heat Risk should appear on most organizational risk assessments which supports the development, maintenance, and exercising of a Heat Emergency Annex to organizational Crisis Management and/or Business Continuity Plans. Makes complete sense. I think about it this way. Would you want AI to make a medical determination on a health issue you have? Or, would you rather discuss the issue with a medical professional that has years experience in the field. Meteorologists are in a similar situation. You need subject matter experts to explain the forecast to decision makers and how it impacts their operations. AI will be another tool in our toolbox. I saw first hand how some AI models handled Hurricane Lee a few months ago. If that was presented as face value to emergency managers and other decision makers, they would have been drove crazy trying to make million dollar decisions on a flip-flop forecast. #AI #meteorology
