An early advisor to Poppy Flowers told me that “unique insights” were key in building a startup with breakout potential. I thought my unique insight was that many wedding florists enforce an order minimum of $5,000, don’t explain it to potential clients, and don’t see any client below that threshold as profitable. So, I thought people who couldn’t meet order minimums would flock to Poppy. We went after those customers. 5 years into this wedding flower thing, I’m realizing that the *actual* insight was simpler: everyone wants a good deal, even if they’ve budgeted $5,000+ for this wedding line item. Duh. Wedding florists apply a 3-4X markup on their wholesale flower costs, a 2X markup on non-perishable goods, and a % fee for “service and labor” — usually 20% of the floral order. The further up market you go, the bigger the markup is, the more flowers are needed, and the more pricey the individual stems get. (Hello, peonies from Holland!) It adds up. That’s why the $7,000 I spent on my own wedding flowers, hard goods, and labor would have easily cost me $25,000 on the open market. Way too rich for my blood — but I was willing to spend a decent sum for value.
