Snuggling stuffed animals might seem like child’s play but at McMaster University it’s the spark that ignites cutting-edge research and groundbreaking medical advancements. At the annual MacKids Walk and Wheel fundraiser in June, over $300,000 was raised to support the McMaster Children's Hospital - Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation. These funds are crucial to advancing child health research and clinical care – projects often led by Pediatrics.  The Foundation's investments have been instrumental to Katherine Morrison's pioneering work in childhood obesity, Gita Wahi's research to address unmet social needs, and Rahul Chanchlani's ALERT-BP designed to combat high blood pressure in children – among many others. 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐲 Legacy Foundation’s Women in Philanthropy Group granted out a total of $19,000 in 2023, $8,000 of that went to Jacob's Ladder Pediatrics! With that funding, the organization purchased equipment used to provide hearing screenings for children in underserved areas of Lake County. I started a fundraising this Monday for vein finders for the neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) at my university teaching hospital, and someone asked, out of curiosity, "Who is a neonate?" A neonate is a child less than 28 days old. To help you understand, let me share a story I saw on WhatsApp today. It features a consultant and a medical student. "Student: I'm presenting a 7-year-old NEONATE. Consultant: Young man, first release your necktie... Student: (removes necktie) Consultant: ...because it's cutting blood supply to your brain!" The consultant is not being mean. A 7-year-old neonate? The student deserves a three-day call! 😂 Seriously, a 7-year-old is NOT a neonate in any classification, and I'm sure the students slipped by categorizing their patients as one. Everyone knows. If you don’t, here is one classification of individuals according to their ages: Early childhood: 1. Neonate (0 - 28 days) 2. Infant (1 - 12 months) 3. Toddler (1 - 3 years) 4. Preschooler (3 - 5 years) 5. School-age (5 - 12 years) Adolescence: 1. Pre-teen (11 - 13 years) 2. Early adolescent (13 - 15 years) 3. Late adolescent (15 - 18 years) Neonates are the youngest and most fragile of all these categories. They account for 45% of deaths among children under 5, according to the World Health Organization. In the first 28 days of life, neonates are in transition from the security of their mother's wombs to the wilderness or bliss of the world. They come barely equipped for life. Their organs are immature, their immunity is weak, and they are at the greatest risk of dying. That’s why doctors often put neonates into the NICUs for intensive care and monitoring. The NICUs are a controlled environment with dedicated staff and equipment to provide round-the-clock care to these babies. How can we keep children safe from abuse during activities? Offenders often work to gain the trust and respect of those around them, which can make it difficult for children to disclose abuse. It is critical to have conversations with the children in your lives so that they know that they can come to you and so that they will have the language necessary to talk to you. Children need to know that they are able to say "no" when it comes to their bodies. Discuss that secrets are not allowed, that they will not be in trouble, and that adults can help. If you have conversations in advance, children will know that you are prepared (or know how to get help) and that you are willing to help. To the untrained eye this photo contains random shapes and shadows, but to our frontline sonographers, it is clear that something is critically wrong with this baby's heart. Finding heart defects at the 20-week anatomy scan is tough work - especially since the baby's heart is approximately the size of an acorn at this age. Multiple angles of the heart are analyzed to ensure that all structures are present, are in the correct place, and are working properly. Think of our training to be similar to CPR training. We provide free, specialized training for sonographers to refresh their skills, providing additional tips and 1:1 feedback on how to recognize more heart defects during regular pregnancy ultrasounds. Walking into our third year of operations, we want to be able to provide this vital service for sonographers in rural AND urban ultrasound centres, but we can't do this without your help. I’ve partnered with the Trusted Care Foundation and Johnny Lee to tackle one of healthcare’s challenges: helping individuals launch into their healthcare careers by getting  hands-on medical assistant training.  Here’s the reality: traditional training programs require in-person labs and externships, making it difficult for aspiring healthcare providers who may be juggling a full-time job and supporting a family, to embark on this new career journey. We saw an opportunity to change that. Via augmented reality glasses, we’re piloting a remote coaching program that connects students with RNs in real-time. Our initial results are promising: students trained through this program have successfully passed their fundamental skill evaluation, demonstrating that effective hands-on training can be delivered remotely. But we’re not stopping there. We’re building a dataset to develop a wearable AI coach, which could expand access to entry-level medical training on an unprecedented scale.
