C-arm machine is an advanced medical imaging device based on X-ray technology and they are primarily used for fluoroscopy capabilities. C-arm is called so, due to its C-shaped arm, which is used to connect the x-ray source on one end and the detector on the other. X-ray (Radiography) and fixed fluoroscopy are used for diagnostic purposes, but C-arm on the other hand, although again a fluoroscopy device, is used to aid surgical procedures. 🚨 Advancing Accuracy in Pediatric Scoliosis Surgery with Machine Vision Navigation 🚨 Pedicle screws are a cornerstone of scoliosis surgery, but the risks of malposition—ranging from 10% to 21% in pediatric cases—pose significant challenges. A recent study from SickKids (Toronto) by Raj Sakhrekar et al. highlights how 7D FLASH Navigation using machine vision technology is transforming pedicle screw insertion. Here's what the study found: 🔍 Study Highlights: 687 screws analyzed across 25 patients with a mean age of 13.6 years. Overall accuracy: 98.0% (Grade 0, no breach). Surgical trainees achieved 98.8% accuracy in screw placement. Complications: Minimal, with only one Grade 3 breach, promptly revised. No neuromonitoring changes, vessel, or visceral injuries reported. 🎯 What this means: 7D FLASH Navigation, paired with both experienced skilled surgeons and even new fellows, enables unprecedented precision in even the most anatomically challenging cases. Did you know that traditional growing rod (TGR) treatment delivers equivalent results to magnetically controlled growing rods (MCGR) for children with early-onset scoliosis (EOS)? The recent Pediatric Spine Study Group (Pediatric Spine Foundation) study published in Spine Deformity answers this critical treatment question. EOS presents in various forms, each with unique challenges. Using cases from the Pediatric Spine Study Group database, this study confirms the equivalence of both the distraction-based growing rod systems from the radiological standpoint during the lengthening phase and at the time of the definitive surgery. This outcome consistency reinforces the importance of evidence-based approaches. Machine learning model predicts surgical outcomes in #pediatric #scoliosis surgery, paving the way for surgeons to identify patient risk factors for unplanned returns to the operating room.
