One of the most discussed topics in the construction industry is currently on sustainability and how our structures impact the environment. Sustainability is one of the main benefits of precast concrete. Precast concrete is a versatile and durable material, has virtually no waste, is energy efficient, assists with reaching green/LEED certification, and enhances the longevity of our structures. An excellent example of sustainability is Fred D. Thompson U.S. Courthouse and Federal Building in Tennessee. The precast concrete facade features photocatalytic concrete, which leverages a specially formulated cement capable of using the sun’s rays to oxidize nitrogen oxides. This special cement gives the concrete a self-cleaning ability, which minimizes maintenance and contributes to the building's longevity. The photocatalytic cement also reacts with the surrounding environment to effectively remove pollutants from the air. Read more about this award-winning project here: https://lnkd.in/gp9prbi2 During PCI Precast Days, we will highlight a specific benefit of precast concrete. Stay tuned to read about tomorrow’s benefit, and follow #precastdays to see which plants are opening their doors. #howprecastbuilds #precastprotectslife #precastconcrete #pciprecastdays #education #precastis #precastbuilding #designconstruction #architecture

The Blue Hill Falls Bridge is a historic structure enjoyed by the community; however, after years of use it was in need of a replacement. Many design proposals were explored for the new bridge, ultimately the design team decided on a precast, prestressed concrete girder bridge. The precast concrete producer, J.P. Carrara & Sons, Inc. , used accelerated bridge construction methods to expedite on-site work. The use of precast concrete limited disruption for commuters, was environmentally conscious, and provided a durable infrastructure solution for the public, all while reducing carbon footprint. This project is a 2025 PCI Design Award Winner in the Transportation category, Best Bridge with a Main Span from 76-200 Feet. 💡𝐏𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧-𝐍𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲💡 Post-tensioned slabs leverage a specialised construction method, reducing both concrete volume and slab reinforcement, while enhancing structural performance compared to traditional reinforced concrete structures. Working toward a low-carbon concrete future is becoming a reality with post-tensioning structures. By optimising material usage and enhancing structural efficiency, post-tensioning significantly lowers the carbon footprint of construction projects, paving the way for more sustainable building practices. The precision and strength of post-tensioned concrete allow for reduced material consumption without compromising structural integrity. This not only cuts down on costs but also leads to significant reductions in embodied carbon. Let’s take a closer look at how these savings are manifesting in the Australian and New Zealand markets. #PostTensioning #Concrete #Building #Construction #Infrastructure James Mizzi Dave Sharp James Woods Lance Rogers Tim Peters Sander van Ameijde Michael Cleven
