For the last several years I've facilitated strategic planning work for the AGC of Kansas during their annual board retreat. The construction industry (trades, crafts and related) continues to face nearly insurmountable hurdles in a number of areas. And yet every year I watch this board gather and work tirelessly to think more broadly, message more intently, recruit more widely, and develop more professionally. It is astounding the passion and tenacity they bring to the table every year. I grew up experiencing the great American road trip every summer. Roads (that someone built) taking me to small towns and big cities (that someone built) to see and do cool things (that someone built) making memories that last a lifetime. Then I'd go back to school (that someone built) and share all about my travels that included quirky hotels with fun kid pools and themed restaurants and miniature golf and fancy museums and massive amusement parks and huge zoos and quaint movie theaters and ice cream parlors and t-shirt stores and knickknack shops (that someone all built). May we never lose sight of what builders build. And may we rise up the next generation of great crafters. M.G. Dale Phillips and I recently attended the New York Multifamily & Residents of The Future conference hosted by Bisnow. The conference provided us with valuable insights into the current zoning laws and construction codes affecting projects across the various boroughs of New York City. One particularly intriguing aspect was the discussion surrounding the numerous conversion projects currently underway in the city. These conversions have the potential to reshape the urban landscape and significantly impact the housing market. Additionally, it was enlightening to hear the perspectives of the panelists regarding the future direction of the construction industry in New York City. Attending such conferences is essential for staying well-informed about industry trends, fostering professional connections, and making informed decisions in our respective roles. #generalcontracting #conversionconstruction #buildingthefuture

Michael Gove unveiled pivotal planning policy changes at the RIBA this week, focusing on the BIDEN principles: beauty, infrastructure, democracy, environment, and neighborhood. Housing need took center stage, emphasizing local plans and sanctions for non-compliance. Planning fees increased, with assurances that proceeds will benefit planning services. The delicate balance of density, character, and Green Belt considerations marked Gove's approach, setting the stage for further consultations in 2024. Let’s see if these proposals adequately shake up a troubled planning system. #riba #planning #development #architecture

The panel that I enjoyed the most at the summit. Talking about inclusion: how do we make the construction industry more desirable to women, to Gen Z (my goodness don't tell the younger generation about 10 paid leave days per annum), how to retain talent in your company. I also loved that we discussed mental health especially looking at men (male dominated industry). The statistics of men who succumb to suicide is wild. This needs to be addressed, even in the construction industry. Listen, a wholesome conversation. I hope we take these nuggets and actually implement. One speaker said: "Be the manager you wish you had." 😉 And that right there resonated. If you had a bad manager, there's absolutely no need to emulate that. No need. Change the narrative. Change the story. You can do it. National Construction Summit
Special thanks to Lara Oyedele, CEO of Lara Homes Ltd & Black On Board Ltd, for moderating our insightful panel discussion on 'Building a Resilient Workforce: Attracting and Retaining Skilled Construction Talent' at the National Construction Summit. Our esteemed panellists Roisin Fitzpatrick from Deloitte Ireland, Ciara Whyte from Movember, and Mark Whitehead from CPAC Modular shared invaluable perspectives. Cincinnati ranks in the Top 5 of the 2023 Governor's Cup for total capital investment projects - Rounding out the top five are Illinois (552), Ohio (462), California (374) and Georgia (318). Texas (1,254) saw the largest increase in construction jobs in 2023, at 32,800 or 4.3% more than the previous year. Qualified means projects are private sector and meet one or more of these criteria: 20 or more new jobs created, 20,000 or more sq. ft. of new construction and/or capital investment of at least $1 million. https://lnkd.in/gJxQ9MDZ #cincinnati #ohio #cre #commercialrealestate #development #construction #projects #governorscup #investmentproject #capitalinvestment
