This week marks 12 years since Lt. Brian Murphy responded first to an active shooter hate crime that took multiple lives. Brian took 15 rounds intended for more innocent victims. His direct action in standing between evil and the public was both heroic and selfless. Thank you Brian, and thank you for your service to Armor Express as well as the first responders you teach nationwide. #firstresponder #save #saves

This situation may not have perfectly matched the mold of a classic "Active Shooter" scenario, but a clear and immediate threat emerged. Civilians intervened, demonstrating the crucial role they can play in minimizing casualties. Studies show that civilian intervention directly reduces the number of victims in these events – in fact, bystanders stop 15% of all active attacks. #activeshootertraining #first30group #everyminutematters https://lnkd.in/gdxjR2dR

Notwithstanding the outstanding work you have done in the US (Katherine Schweit, J.D., CCEP) - the Second Amendment as well as our countries vastly different approach to firearms and firearm control - could the United States enhance its response to active shooter incidents by adopting a more integrated multi-agency approach, similar to the UK model?
...an interesting read Katherine Schweit, J.D., CCEP, especially (as we have mentioned previously) the high profile mega events the US is staging over the next 10 years and the impact shooter incidents may have on public perception around safety. In the UK, the response to an active shooter situation differs from the US primarily through a more centralised, multi-agency approach in crisis management and firearms control. UK police forces are routinely unarmed, which means armed responses are meticulously managed and involve highly specialised units such as the Metropolitan Police’s SCO19. Fire has Special Entry Recovery Teams (SERT). The Ambulance Service has Hazardous Area Response & Special Operational Response Teams (HART & SORT). These units totally interoperate & undergo rigorous and continuous training including with the UK Special Forces, focusing heavily on de-escalation, minimum force, creating safer & contained environment in which to operate and allowing access to casualties. The UK also emphasises extensive prevention strategies, including robust gun control laws and active community engagement programs, which significantly reduce the likelihood and frequency of such incidents compared to the US. That said, scale is everything here. Im not sure there are any/many comparisons to be made at all between the 2 countries. Close allies for sure - but culturally light years apart....

September is National Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month — In our four-part series we’re talking specifically about suicide in the Veteran community. One of the most effective ways to prevent suicide is by reducing access to lethal means, particularly firearms. Veterans are more likely than the general population to own guns, and unfortunately, firearms are the most common method of suicide among veterans. Safely storing firearms—using gun safes, trigger locks, and other safety devices—can create a crucial time barrier that may prevent a suicide attempt during a moment of crisis. Education on lethal means safety is a key component of suicide prevention efforts. Both the VA and community organizations like RVP provide resources and education on safe firearm storage. By promoting responsible gun ownership and encouraging Veterans to take proactive steps in securing their firearms, we can reduce the risk of suicide. Conversations about gun safety can be difficult, but they are essential. By addressing this issue head-on, we can protect the lives of Veterans and their Loved Ones. #suicideprevention #suicideawarness #suicidepreventionmonth #mentalhealth #youarenotalone #Veterans #servicemembers #militaryconnectedfamilies #oregon #soutwestwashington #rvp

Ummm. We learned through Uvalde that a good guy with a gun often does not have the courage to stop a bad guy with a gun… That was actually 130 good guys with guns who are unwilling to protect children. So... how about we push for the first clause of the second amendment which says, "a well-regulated militia being necessary to a free state, the right to keep in our their arms shall not be infringed." If the first clause were enforced, every gun owner could be required to be a member of a "well regulated militia." in other words, regulations could be mandated to require registration, vetting, trainings,Mental Health Checks, mentorin, meetings where the militia as a group make sure that unhealthy gun owners are held in check… and if a member commits amass murder, restrictions could be put on the militia itself. If a second mass murder happens from within that same militia, that particular militia chaptercould be shut down, the guns confiscated and/or members required to join a different militia. Because what does well regulated mean?

When threat management is executed correctly, the results are correct as well.
Another school shooting plot averted by a student hearing a classmate talking about an attack and saying something to an adult. This is the 8th publicly reported planned attack that has been detected so far in 2024. A 14-year-old student in Ohio had a detailed plan and hitlist. Mariemont Chief of Police Richard Hines said, “If we hadn’t gotten the tip, I think we would have had a very bad situation.” School shootings are not prevented or deterred by armed staff, fences, clear backpacks, bulletproof chalkboards, and fortifying school buildings to resemble military bases or prisons. If students are empowered to have an active role is preventing violence, this is the lowest cost and most holistic approach to prevent an attack *before* a student brings a gun to school.
