My United States 🇺🇸 military service was a conscious choice. I chose to enlist multiple times ultimately attaining 21 years. Those that sell their service to America as subpar or less than others are flat out wrong! Comparing is truly the thief of all joy! Its a flawed system of thinking. Your path was never meant to be remotely close to any other person or job title! I could not have chose the Iraq and Afghanistan wars during my service to America. I did not pick the terror attack of the USS Cole in Yemen 🇾🇪 harbor I was apart of! Catastrophic events or Combat does not equal better military service. Your selection of career paths is solely dependent upon your desire and abilities! It’s not about the timeframe, job title or events that may occur in your military service. Reflecting on job descriptions, I realize I possess the skills and education sought by many positions. Yet, translating my experience leading diverse projects, missions, and teams from the military into civilian language poses a challenge. How can I convey the value of my service effectively? This is a common struggle for veterans. While some are fortunate to secure great positions, most of us face a journey of hard work. Stay resilient, connect with programs and individuals who have walked this path before. This is a great article about a possibility of fixing our recruiting and retention efforts in the US Military. Norway 🇳🇴 is doing it right. Somewhere along the road of time, military service started to lose its value as a career among Americans. Obviously the 20+ years of the Global War on Terror had something to do with that, but comparing the amount of losses we’ve had to the amount losses of our past wars, it’s extremely lopsided. Even deployment times, men and women spent no longer than 18 months deployed, but in WWII they stayed until the job was done or they were significantly injured enough to not be effective on the battlefield. Besides all of that, let’s think of the garrison environment. Is it unappealing to American’s to serve, learn a skill, earn a college degree, travel and see the world and do more in 4-5 years than most Americans their entire life ( I should’ve joined the Navy, hooyah master chief). Another important aspect is the fact that they will learn about values, morals, and serving a purpose greater than oneself. With the societal shift in the last 10 years, (from what I observe) people the world over have started to lose important characteristics like values, morals, and manners. So.
