Military Transitioning Tip: if someone asks what you did in the Marine Corps (or Army, Air Force, etc), avoid saying numbers. As with resumes, your goal should always be to translate your experience to civilian speak. Your average American did not serve in the military. Of those that did, most of us have not memorized every MOS code. Translate your MOS to an actual job title. And while it may seem silly, because, sure, I could just ask you “what does that mean,” it’s indicative of greater concerns. When I’m looking to hire someone, I want them to have strong communication skills. Strong communication skills require understanding your audience and accepting that your audience does not know every MOS code, billet title, and abbreviation. Whether in conversation or in reading your resume, most hiring managers are going to be so overwhelmed with candidates, they’re not going to do the work to translate your experience to determine its relevance.
