The words of the Sergeant Major of the Army underscore the vital role the Noncommissioned Officer Corps has in professional writing. “The next fight will be hard. Success or failure is in our own hands and depends on our ability to prepare. The enemy will give us no grace if we fail to learn or adapt quickly. No one is closer to the Army’s problems than our Non-Commissioned Officer Corps. Day in and day out you are the closest to the fight and take care of our Soldiers. This leadership comes with the professional obligation to share what you have learned with the next generation of Soldiers. Your insights, ideas, and experiences are critical to winning the next battle. Many Soldiers think professional discourse, primarily writing, is officer business—false. None of our NCOs should have a problem telling another Soldier when they need to check their azimuth. We should have the same resolve when stewarding the profession. Discuss, research, write, debate, articulate, and present your ideas. This special issue is designed to help you get started. You have the answers—we need to hear them, the next war depends on it. This We’ll Defend!” Will you answer the call? Will you have the courage to share your knowledge, experience, and lessons learned through professional military writing? Our future depends on it.

An intelligence professional who specializes in how our adversaries fight. Views expressed are my own and do not represent those of the US Army
The team at Military Review published a special edition on military professional writing. With the challenges we face from the Operational Environment, our best defense is the thoughtful Soldier, Civilian, and leader. Writing and reading is essential to this. As LTG Milford Beagle, Jr ("Beags") notes, good writing is good thinking. If you have an idea, share it by writing an article. #HardingProject #ArmyMadSci

Another way to spur more writing, and the bring it down from the graduate/academic level, is to provide a less formal, more disscusion-based platform. The Army needs more professional blogs, where anyone from across the force can start or contribute to the dicussion. Most of the online writing platforms, such as those under West Point (MWI, Articles of War) are as elite and closed-off as any academic journal. If the Army is serious about getting folks to write more, and to do so in a more interactive way, they need to provide the platforms. How about a blog under the NCO Journal and the Military Review? Or maybe something completely new.

David Cyr, M. Ed., M.S. wrote an article encouraging NCOs to write and share their experiences. SGM Cyr writes about the importance of the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) corps in the U.S. Army and the need for continuous improvement. The article suggests that learning from past experiences is crucial to avoid repeating mistakes and to foster progress. He encourages NCOs to share their experiences and insights by writing and publishing their work. The article provides resources and strategies to help NCOs overcome barriers to writing, such as collaborating with others and gaining confidence. Ultimately, it underscores the importance of sharing knowledge to strengthen the Army and prepare for future challenges. https://lnkd.in/gdWQJH9J The NCO Leadership Center of Excellence and Sergeants Major Academy US Army TRADOC Army University Press The Army University #NCOJournal @NCOJournal #SergeantsMajorAcademy #MilitarySucces #ProfessionalDevelopment #Lifelonglearning #Learningisfun #Educationmatters

I’m excited to share that a couple of my articles have been approved for publication this Winter: ☛ Battlefield Algorithm: Leveraging Predictive Analytics in Contested Environments ☛ Writing for Victory: Developing Adaptive Leaders for the War of Tomorrow These articles will appear in the “Army Sustainment” and “Army Communicator” branch journals. For those who aren’t aware, the “Harding Project” is a Chief of Staff of the Army initiative to promote professional military writing across the force. If you haven’t visited the newly released “Line of Departure” website, you should: ➥ What it Delivers: • Optimized mobile platform • Contains all military journals • Hosts over 20 military podcasts • Features hundreds of published articles ➥ Why it Matters: • Ease of access for Soldiers • Integrates well with unit writing programs • Provides SEO optimization for Google Scholar • Underscores the Army’s investment in intellectualism ★ My plea to the NCO Corps ★ Every year the Army loses thousands of years of military experience… Whether it’s the first term Sergeant who decides to ETS or the 30 year Command Sergeant Major who retires. If you truly want to leave the Army better than you found it… I challenge you to capture your insights and experience in writing and share them with the force. Your voice matters, but you must have the courage to let it be heard. #BeAllYouCanBe #HardingProject #DubikFellow P.S. If you’re interested in professional military writing, but don’t know where to start, just drop me a comment or message. As a member of the LTG(R) James M. Dubik Writing Fellow, I’m here to help.

Really great #MilitaryReview article that encourages leaders attending professional military education courses to consider publishing one of their assigned essays as a professional journal article. Great idea that may serve as an incentive to encourage NCOs and officers to engage more in professional writing. ✍️ 🤓💪🇮🇪 “…important ideas can spring from PME writing assignments that deserve a wider audience. Sadly, in most cases, the last set of eyes to see these papers are the instructors tasked with grading them. Still, with some forethought and a few alterations, any PME student can and should publish one of their assigned writing projects as a professional article.” https://lnkd.in/e7UCStqi
