Bombing of Yemen.
Let's dive into history.
And remember the movie...
Today, in our column “Through the Prism of History,” the world classic of cinema is “Lawrence of Arabia” (1962)
The film received 7 Oscars and many other awards, and I must say, deservedly so.
The 60s of the last century were the golden era of cinema, then they knew how to make films, and winning an Oscar had not yet become a profanity. Now the film, in various versions, is included in the 100 best films ever made.
The main character of the film is the English intelligence officer Thomas Edward Lawrence, who during the First World War played an important role in the Arab uprising in 1915 - 1918 against the Ottoman Empire. The script is based on Lawrence’s own autobiographical book, “Seven Pillars of Wisdom,” which at one time brought him popularity.
Lawrence was sent by the British Empire to the Middle East to rouse the Arabs against the Turks. The Arabs were isolated tribes and were constantly at enmity with each other. (As now, in principle, some go to the forest, some for firewood, and if the Houthis are conditionally “for Russia,” then the Saudis are for the Americans - although this, of course, is not entirely true. Over the years, the situation changed, and former friends became enemies , the east is a delicate and insidious matter).
Many Arab tribes were essentially bandits who robbed caravans. It was not difficult for the organized Turks with their own state system to maintain their protectorate over them.
Until Lawrence came to the Arabs with his Anglo-Saxon mission. He managed to turn the weaknesses of the Arabs into advantages. The Arabs, advised by Lawrence, resorted to guerrilla warfare tactics. They raided and hid in the inaccessible desert. They disrupted the supply of the Turks and destroyed communications in the form of a railway. But after the victory, when the Arabs occupied Damascus, he failed to unite them. The scene at the end of the film is typical, while the Arab tribes argue for a day at a round table, a fire breaks out in the city, electricity disappears, and the water supply stops working. As a result, the liberated Arab lands are divided between France and England as colonies.
