Our latest contribution, “𝘊𝘰𝘯-𝘈𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺: 𝘓𝘰𝘨𝘪𝘵-𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘢 𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘤 𝘢𝘪𝘳𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨”, has just been published in 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘈: 𝘗𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘗𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦. In this paper, Nicolò Avogadro, paolo malighetti, Stefano Paleari, and I develop a novel framework to better characterize airport catchment areas by seamlessly integrating ground accessibility and airport attractiveness. The proposed approach accounts for the scale and strategic scope of national airport system planning while maintaining behavioral realism in the modeling of passenger demand and addressing the empirical challenge of sparse calibration data. We applied this framework to the 𝗜𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗶𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻, demonstrating how it informs three key policy questions such as: (i) assessing airport concentration and interactions in serving contested areas; (ii) systematically quantifying the overall level of con-accessibility for any municipality to identify deficits or surpluses and target areas for strategic intervention; and (iii) supporting the assessment and prioritization of initiatives, such as upgrading ground access networks, expanding airport services, and establishing new airport facilities. The San Diego Association of Governments is exploring how it can integrate Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) 🚁 in its public transportation system. Challenges such as the city's airspace and geography, and regulatory compliance require complex planning to ensure AAM is available to all. Arcadis is working with @SANDAG to fulfill its goal of making AAM a reality. I’m pleased to share my latest publication in the International Journal of Aeronautical and Space Sciences (WOS Q2). 🌍 Title: "Efficiency-Based Airport Ground Conflict Detection and Resolution: Integrating Stand Hold Strategy with Constrained Position Shifting" With increasing air traffic, advanced ground management strategies are crucial. This study introduces the Stand Hold (SH) strategy integrated with a mixed-integer programming (MIP) model, designed to minimize fuel consumption and emissions by addressing departure conflicts before engine start. Through simulations at Antalya Airport, the model achieved remarkable results: 🔹 88.9% reduction in hold fuel consumption 🔹 Emission reductions: HC (79.2%), CO (84.6%), and NOx (92%) 🔹 25.8% reduction in total delays 🔹 72.7% and 57.7% conflict reduction at the first and second conflict points This model provides air traffic controllers with a powerful tool to enhance airport ground operations, balancing efficiency and fairness through the Constrained Position Shifting (CPS) strategy. 🗓️ Published on: 22 September 2024 📄 Available here: https://lnkd.in/dSGR-wd9 #aviation #airportmanagement #research #publication #aeronautics #optimization #airtrafficcontrol #environmentalsustainability
