I boycotted summer plans for my children and it was about 66 percent successful. I just couldn't do it; as a working mom I didn't have it in me to arrange the camps and the to-ing and fro-ing this time around. I'm not sure I recommend it, given the feedback from 33 percent of my children, but it did feel very nice to avoid the time in the car. It's so tough as parents in the summer figuring out child transportation options. The good news is that you don't have to just give up like I did ... there are options! As an example, the safe, reliable CareDrivers tapped by HopSkipDrive's network, bolstered by industry-leading technology innovations, are available this summer in key markets, PHEW, to step in for rides to camp, the pool or anything that says "summer sun." Today's update: First, in the off chance that you're a skilled outdoor, adventure, leadership, and/or clinical facilitator and also checking LinkedIn right now for some reason and want to be out in communities providing support for youth, please fill out this form: https://lnkd.in/e39CU_rf Now, the story telling: working in the outdoor industry for over a decade now, specifically on the programming side of things, has often come with that sense of being the misunderstood and sometimes underappreciated department (in campus rec, in nonprofits, etc). What I'm seeing here in Western NC/Eastern TN/across Appalachia is the outdoor ed folks showing WAY up. Putting those leadership skills into action. I'm excited to be working with PIVOTPoint WNC and Talisman Summer Camp, coordinating to get therapeutic emotional support and processing programming to kids in affected areas. I've also seen Waypoint Adventure offering up their adaptive equipment to help evac/transport folks, WILDERNESS EDUCATION ASSOCIATION, Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education (AORE), and The Association for Experiential Education members showing up for their communities, Wilderness Medical Associates International, NOLS Wilderness Medicine and other certified folks putting their Wilderness First Aid/First Responder/EMT skills to good use. French Broad Adventures raft guides going out on swiftwater rescues with local fire departments. Backpackers hiking in to do supply drops and welfare checks. And this is just what I'm seeing from my vantage point, which is admittedly limited. I often joke that while I don't take myself seriously, I take the work that I do seriously. It is a lot of fun, it is also so needed and so valuable and SO critical in ways that I don't think people often understand. This region is an area that is built on outdoor recreation, and when outdoor professionals are needed, we show up. This is what outdoor leadership looks like. This is what leadership in general looks like. We don't just have fun, we're skilled and we care. (really cool picture courtesy of FBA staff) #HurricaneHelene #AppalachiaStrong #OutdoorLeadership

Child & Adolescent Psychologist 👶🏻🧒🏻 Inspiring Through Nature & Nurture 🌱 You'll find me talking about young minds, plants and art!
Nature's Playground: The Key to a Child's Growth Just yesterday, I stumbled upon this fantastic YouTube video shared below titled "Kids Thrive with Movement". As a huge advocate for Outdoor Play, it resonated deeply, and I wanted to share my thoughts with this amazing community! Often, we might get caught up in daily routines, and mindful involvement in a child's development can take a backseat. But here's the thing: encouraging outdoor play is crucial! Nature provides a unique and enriching classroom, fostering: • Curiosity: From the textures of leaves to the movement of insects, nature ignites a child's natural desire to learn and explore. • Creativity: Open-ended play in natural settings sparks imagination and hones problem-solving skills. • Physical Activity: Climbing, running, and jumping contribute to healthy development and stress reduction. • Connection to the Environment: By spending time outdoors, children develop a deeper appreciation for the world around them. Let's get our young minds off screens and into the fresh air! #OutdoorPlay #NaturePlay #KidsThriveWithMovement (Video Courtesy of: That Mountain Life | A YT Channel that promotes Adventure Parenting)

I have always been a very outgoing person with a pretty social life, both work and personal, but after becoming a parent during the pandemic that took a huge shift. I was sharing with someone recently that the most isolating experience I have had in life is being a toddler (2 under 2) parent. You are constantly trying to make sure your children are in safe places and have adults who care for them. It is hard to describe how difficult it is to take toddlers to places that aren't safe. A playground with a 6 foot tall slide is like Mt. Everest to an 18 month old. I consider myself highly resilient and adaptable and always trying to figure out how to make a solution. So, I have some ideas I am putting out here. I may not have the technical knowledge, appropriate connections or capital to make these happen but maybe there are others who can take the ideas and run with them. 💡 YELP/GOOGLE to include a way for people to highlight "good for toddlers/preschoolers" - A stay at home mom has started this for Orange County but how can we do it everywhere? https://lnkd.in/gHpPwrWj 🏞 City Buildings/Parks to start repurposing spaces that are already open to the public for young kids to play - tons of indoor playgrounds are being built but aren't there already buildings and unused space we can tap into? ❇ Repurpose old commercial buildings into indoor spaces for working parents with toddler safe areas. Think of the IKEA drop off area for toddlers with an attached WeWork (or similar).

Who’s with me? Embracing a ‘90s upbringing for my child means less worry, more adventure, and a slower pace. It’s about fostering unstructured play, where scratches and bruises are badges of courage, and screens take a backseat to real-world exploration. It’s a time when simple values reigned supreme, and the joy of discovery trumped the allure of constant digital distractions. In this ‘90s-style upbringing, we prioritize hands-on experiences, outdoor adventures, and the freedom to roam, allowing our children to learn, grow, and develop resilience in the process. #90schildhood #slowliving #simplekindoflife #alternativeeducation #homeeducation #homeschoollife #2ndgenhome https://lnkd.in/dWcJagkb
