Excellent overview about distinct terms that are frequently, yet incorrectly, treated as synonyms. I’m currently working on an aggressive piece of research with Umaru Kargbo and Prof. Biju T at the University of Kerala (India) where we track key themes in sustainability research dating back to the mid-1980s. One key theme is the evolution of terminology. More to come…

Building ESG: CSR vs. ESG: Are They Really the Same? _______________________________________ Often, we hear CSR and ESG used interchangeably, but are they? Let's dive into the nuances. CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) is a company's commitment to operating in a way that contributes positively to society. It's about ethical practices, philanthropy, employee engagement, and community involvement. ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) is a framework used to measure a company's sustainability. It focuses on the environmental impact, social practices, and corporate governance. While both share a common goal of sustainability, ESG is more quantifiable and measurable. It's a framework that investors and stakeholders use to assess a company's performance. Key Differences: * Focus: CSR is broader, encompassing a company's overall impact, while ESG is more specific to environmental, social, and governance factors. * Measurement: ESG is often measured using standardized metrics and frameworks, making it easier to compare companies. * Mandate: ESG is increasingly becoming a regulatory requirement, while CSR is often voluntary. * Integration: ESG is typically integrated throughout a company's strategy, while CSR might be a separate activity. * Departments Involved: ESG often involves a steering committee across various departments, while CSR might be handled by a specific department or a version of corporate citizenship. * True Impact: While both CSR and ESG aim to create a positive impact, ESG's focus on measurable metrics allows for a more accurate assessment. * Business Value: ESG is increasingly viewed as a core driver of business value, while CSR has historically been seen as a "nice-to-have" activity. So, while CSR is a vital component of ESG, they are not identical. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for businesses and investors alike. What do you think? Are CSR and ESG truly interchangeable, or are there significant differences? David Carlin has excellently captured the moving landscape of ESG in 2025 with this article here. Key trends, however, remain optimistic: 1. Result-focused actions over high-profile public commitments: the focus has turned inwards; organisations are prioritising actions over new promises and working on delivering on the commitments they have already made. 2. Integration of Sustainability into business operations rather than as a standalone initiative. ESG Reporting has now established itself in the CEO office. We have seen with our clients over the last year how it happens - talk to us all things ESG Reporting. 3. The economic returns of Sustainability. Many firms are finally seeing the business value of sustainability from unlocking new markets and opportunities to supporting efficiencies that reduce costs. Are your businesses ESG-ready? #ESG #ESGReporting #CorporateReporting #Sustainability
