With buildings responsible for nearly 40% of global #carbon emissions, adopting the #LEED O+M (Operations & Maintenance) framework is key to decarbonizing existing structures and advancing toward #netzero. It also facilitates benchmarking and performance tracking, both of which are crucial in any organization's transition toward #netzero. At Burj Khalifa LLC , the world’s tallest building, we applied #LEED O+M to achieve #LEED Platinum certification. This required a collaborative and integrative approach between Farnek Services LLC and Emaar, tackling the unique challenges of decarbonizing such a large and complex building. We showcased this achievement at the recent Emirates Environmental Group event, demonstrating how even the tallest buildings can decarbonize and align with broader #ESG goals. It’s proof that with the right framework, #sustainability in the #builtenvironment is not only achievable but impactful. It was also a privilege to join a panel alongside industry leaders Haithem IbraheemJason Carlow Sarfraz DairkeeThanveer Hussain where we discussed key factors in decarbonizing skyscrapers, including: 1. Shifting mindsets 2. Embracing innovation and adaptability 3. Challenging conventional practices 4. Fostering collaboration and stakeholder engagement Above all, #commitment emerged as the most critical element in achieving #netzero and sustainable success. The transport and mobility sector holds the key to achieving 2030 and 2050 climate targets. However, it requires massive investments in vehicle and battery technology, charging infrastructure, and grid upgrades, along with a just transition for the workforce and a focus on minimizing the sector's impact on nature and biodiversity. Collaboration is essential. Governments must create policies to de-risk private investments in clean transport, while businesses should leverage cross-value chain partnerships and innovative models. Green road corridors and urban hubs present transformative opportunities to optimize investments and accelerate the transition. Looking ahead, WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s transport sector companies will mobilize demand for zero-emission vehicles and infrastructure in key markets, drive financing solutions, and develop nature-positive, just transport models.
