#HW2024 Following on from yesterday's theme, lets talk about whole school approaches to addressing child and adolescent #homelessness. Why? Because, #schools have the capacity to offer what homelessness takes away – they are a safe, predictable routine-oriented environment that fosters social connections, with access to support structures. Importantly, whole school approaches span the spectrum of responses that range from promotion, #prevention, and acute responses, to ongoing support. Street children are a growing concern in many African countries, with issues ranging from poverty and family breakdown to lack of access to education and healthcare. Many of these children end up living on the streets, facing numerous dangers such as exploitation, abuse, and malnutrition. African communities are increasingly recognizing the need to address the root causes of this problem and provide support for these vulnerable children. Efforts to provide shelter, education, and healthcare for street children are being made, but more resources and attention are needed to ensure the well-being and future prospects of these marginalized youth. TGIF! Street children are very vulnerable and highly prone to becoming victims of trauma and stress. As a result, it is important to know how to support vulnerable children dealing with trauma and stress. Here are 3 ways to help: 1️⃣ Provide Emotional Support: Create a safe space where children can express their feelings. Show empathy and understanding to help them cope better. 2️⃣ Implement Trauma-Informed Care: Understand the impact of trauma on children's development. Use strategies that acknowledge their experiences and promote healing. 3️⃣ Engage in Therapeutic Activities: Encourage activities like art, play, music, or mindfulness to help children process their emotions. If needed, seek professional help. Can the same agency that tears families apart also help them heal and hold them together? Last year, I joined a panel discussion with CPS workers, leveraging my experience with families living in poverty and those under investigation. I find that CPS investigators are passionate about helping children. Yet, they encounter significant resistance from parents, understandably fearful of the invasive and potentially devastating effects of these investigations. The dynamic raises questions about trust and efficacy within the system. The same parents who are wary of CPS have a positive response to our team, which provides direct assistance such as food, diapers, navigation, couching, support groups, and financial aid in a supportive, non-threatening manner. Our discussions also revealed the emotional burdens carried by CPS workers. They fear the repercussions from the courts and can be deeply affected by the few traumatic cases they handle, from severe neglect to abuse. The chasm between CPS and the communities they serve is huge and, I believe, impossible to bridge. Without trust, how can they accurately assess risk, or provide the tailored support families truly need? The proof is in the outcomes. They can’t. The way the system is designed sets CPS up for failure and children and families. Rewire the $$$ CPS should be drastically scaled down to focus only on severe abuse or neglect, while family wellbeing should be handed over to community organizations, funded by state and Title IV-E funding. Ultimately, the same agency that can tear your family apart will never be fully trusted to keep your family together.
