Hey everyone,
Remember a few weeks back when the NVIDIA CEO sent shockwaves saying "coding is a dying profession" Well, buckle up because a startup called Cognition just launched Devin, the world's first fully autonomous AI software engineer!
Devin's basically a coding whiz with its own IDE, browser, and debugger. Imagine a tireless teammate that can write code, fix bugs, and even work across different programming languages – talk about streamlining workflows! Devin can translate between coding languages, write different parts of a program based on your instructions, and even identify and fix bugs in existing code.
Now the big question: is Devin here to steal our jobs or become our ultimate AI coding buddy?
Some folks are calling it just marketing hype, is it?
In my view, Devin could free us developers from repetitive tasks, allowing us to focus on the bigger picture and tackle more creative problems.
What are your thoughts? Is Devin a game-changer or just a fad? Let's chat in the comments!

What is the future of sw engineering?
Here a glimpse on the newly released ai software engineer Devin. Safety and the structural integration into sw dev teams might be the biggest challenges today. But the future of ai applications are changing increasingly faster.
I like the following analysis representing a practical and senior sw engineers view:

Just stumbled across #Devin today after someone tagged me to check it out - claiming to be the world's first AI software engineer - it even uses print statements to debug and figure out what was wrong to then go back and make changes. Wow. Obviously I am dubious until I have had a chance to play with it myself - but if this is sign of things to come - very interesting stuff. Check the video below and can also learn more at https://lnkd.in/gNAueJc2 on their blog
Automating Software Engineering
"Coding” was never the source of value, and people shouldn’t get overly attached to it. Problem-solving is the core skill... ” ~ John Carmack
This is a powerful reminder as AI capabilities rapidly expand. Software engineering is indeed becoming increasingly abstract. Imagine a future where you supervise AI systems, communicating high-level goals and strategies in natural language.
Like the evolution of self-driving cars, this won't happen overnight. AI will start as a powerful assistant, while continuously chipping away at the edges towards autonomy.
**Introducing Devin: The First AI Software Engineer Setting a New Standard on the SWE-bench Coding Benchmark**
Meet Devin, the world’s first fully autonomous AI software engineer.
Devin is a tireless, skilled teammate, equally ready to build alongside you or independently complete tasks for you to review. With Devin, engineers can focus on more interesting problems, and engineering teams can strive for more ambitious goals.
**Devin's Capabilities*
With our advances in long-term reasoning and planning, Devin can plan and execute complex engineering tasks requiring thousands of decisions. Devin can recall relevant context at every step, learn over time, and fix mistakes.
We've also equipped Devin with common developer tools, including the shell, code editor, and browser within a sandboxed compute environment—everything a human would need to do their work.
Finally, we've given Devin the ability to actively collaborate with users. Devin reports on its progress in real-time, accepts feedback, and works together with you through design choices as needed.
Here's a sample of what Devin can do: https://lnkd.in/gNkNd73Y

🔥Hot Take: Certain skills may fade, but problem-solving and coding are more vital than ever! 💪
Mathematicians would become obsolete was a statement during the advent of the calculator. Same story now.
Here's my extended opinion: Undoubtedly, the industry will undergo a significant transformation. Coding programs - even numbers to binary inversion days are gone. However, the essential abilities of problem-solving and programming will remain indispensable.
💭 Think about this: Who's gonna keep AI running smoothly? 🤖
Will it be the AI itself or us humans? 🧠
And if humans are in charge, shouldn't we understand the AI's code first?🤔

AI can significantly reduce the time spent on coding and debugging and even tackle complex algorithms. Yet, I think, the human element of understanding user needs, making ethical decisions, and innovating in uncharted territories remains indispensable. As AI evolves, the role of software engineers is likely to transform rather than disappear, moving towards more strategic, creative, and supervisory functions in the software development lifecycle.

Thank you for the repost, Varenya Dingari, and nice to hear that you are doing well.
Before 2022 software engineers were regarded as rocket scientists. Now they are regarded as hairdressers. Once upon a time "typist" was a well-respected profession. Today we are all typists. The shortest-lived profession in the universe is "prompt engineer". Nobody ever got a paystub as a prompt engineer. This is how tumultuous things are. We are all becoming prompt engineers and software engineers, just as we all became typists. Worse still. If speaking is faster than typing, we will even forget our typist skill.
Alternatively, our typing will become faster than speaking through autocompletion, or even stranger, a combination of speaking and typing can appear in the future. We speak and talk at once the same thing and get through it faster.
Sometimes I regretted not giving computer science a more prominent place in my life. With AI that regret is gone. Could have been a waste of time. Now I can fluently program in all programming languages known to man and machine. I still have an interest in computer science, but only at its research cutting edge.
