EVERY BELT NEEDS A BED! Sealing transfer points is a familiar problem that almost every facility faces. While some are from a lack of maintenance the majority are from issues with conveyor design and components. One of the largest contributing factors is belt sag created by the gap between idler rolls. From a theoretical standpoint the idlers should spread the weight out and the belt should ride flat, just as it does the rest of the conveyor. However, when we take into consideration the forces generated by the transfer of materials and the continuous static load reality sets in. A common “fix” to this is installing several idlers with little spacing between. While this does reduce the size of the problematic gaps, they’re still very present. The real solution is creating a flat surface for your belt and skirtboard seal to ride against. When determining whether to purchase a Slider Bed or Impact Bed it really is as simple as evaluating your current idlers. Ask yourself…Are you bending idler stands or breaking rolls? If no, then a Slider Bed should be sufficient. If you ARE having these issues, it’s time to invest in an Impact System that can absorb all the forces being applied. Regarding the specifics of your system, aluminum core impact bars would work great for moderate impacts while steel core impact bars are the only solution for significant impact forces.
