Summer of Swiping Right: Internship Edition (Lessons Learned as a corporate girlie) 👩🏻💻 Episode 1: The One Where Vedanti Mastered the Art of the Water Cooler ✨ This summer internship episode was like living in a real-life Friends episode, except instead of Central Perk, the hangout spot was the water cooler (hydration is key, people!)😋. It took some initial awkwardness, let me tell you. But within a few days I went from “hello, i’m Vedanti and you are🙋🏻♀️?” to “OMG, she said that😳????” Turns out, those casual chats by the water cooler weren't just about gossip (although, let's be real, there were some juicy tidbits🤫). They were gems of hidden knowledge! From industry hacks to unspoken office norms, my colleagues were guiding me through the hacks of the professional world that put me far ahead in my career than taking up a personal branding workshop ever could💁🏻♀️. They weren't just there to offer a friendly ear, but to share industry details that you won't find in any training manual.📑 The constant flow of conversation (and the strategically placed water cooler where no one could hear us, I might add) kept me fueled and engaged. Today, I listen better, participate more and know exactly why things are the way they are🤳🏻. It turns out, some of the most important lessons don't come from textbooks or lectures, but from the everyday interactions that also help you hydrate better. It's a win-win, right?💃🏻 Here's to the power of the water cooler! 6 useful personal behaviors I’ve instilled during my Woodson Equity internship thus far. 1. Arrive before everyone else; using that quiet time to get settled and focused. Being ready to go as my colleagues arrive sets a productive tone for my day. 2. Breaking my day into hour-long segments. Tracking my activities this way helps me maximize tasks and maintain productivity throughout the day. 3. Use Excel to log my tasks and progress, ensuring everything is organized and easy to follow. Regularly give situational reports my current status on taskers. The work I input into software is almost anonymous, helping my team stay aligned on ongoing projects and responsibilities. 4. Further my connections both in and outside the office. For instance, during my summer I was selected for jury duty in the Northern District Court of Illinois, I met amazing individuals, some whose paths have since crossed with mine during my daily commute. Our mutual commonality in being veterans and working in finance truly demonstrates the power of maintaining connections in unexpected places. 5. Take detailed notes during meetings, tracking key conversations, and sharing those thoughts with my leadership. Asking questions will uncover valuable insights and develop a deeper internship experience. 6. When communicating electronically, always aim for clarity, conciseness, and professionalism. Avoid poor habits like using overly casual language, or unclear phrasing. Review emails and messages to ensure they reflect my best self and convey my thoughts effectively. Over the past weeks, Sebastian Mathias Johannes Schmid, Paul Rollinger and Niklas Autschbach made incredible strides in both hard and soft skills, contributing significantly to our team. *INTERN VIDEO CHALLENGE – Video 1* Like many of you, we have interns working with us at Roberts & Ryan this summer.  It’s important to us that it’s a mutually beneficial relationship – we get some work out of them and they learn in the process! ✅ We do our best to give them as much exposure to different parts of the business as possible.  They work with our fixed income and equity teams, help with our corporate access efforts, and spend time on the NYSE trading floor. ✅ We thought it would be fun to have them break into teams and make videos about the firm.  The idea being that it will be a catalyst for them to take a deeper look at the firm as a whole.  We have a couple of groups coming through, so I’m going to put the videos out as I get them. ✅ This first video was done by Quamique Marcial (“Q”) and Louis Davis, 2 college students that came to us from the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem, and Conrad Luce. It was interesting to me – and made me happy – to see their take on Roberts & Ryan. This video was done entirely by the interns, and this first group was a little pressed for time.  Can’t wait to see what the other teams put together! There is perhaps no more important mission in the gas markets than to expose young people to the nature and importance of energy security, natural gas' critical role in carbon emissions reduction, support for America's Allies around the globe for energy access, use of a native US resource to support a manufacturing renaissance here in the US...the list goes on.
