Last week, Alton’s New York office took part in our Pledge 1% volunteer day initiative, once again teaming up with West Side Campaign Against Hunger (WSCAH) in Manhattan to help alleviate hunger in the city.    WSCAH’s crucial work ensures all New Yorkers have access with dignity to a choice of healthy food and support services. In our efforts to support the local community, our delivery team stopped by Rebekah's Haven yesterday with a Migali Industries Inc refrigerator. Their need for a new refrigerator was shared through a social media post to a private group one of our sales reps, Michelle Greer, is a part of. She was able to get in touch with Director Jamie Kincaid to make the donation possible! The live-in facility is as an affiliate ministry of TOLEDO GOSPEL RESCUE MISSION INC operating solely on donor funds. “Everything we do operates on the generosity of the community. I'm talking monetarily with supplies for moms and for the house, Toledo has really taken care of us,” said Jamie. If you’d like to help the families at Rebekah’s Haven this holiday season, their biggest need is in day-to-day items like cleaning solutions, towels, feminine hygiene items, toilet paper, bedding for XL twin beds, and the other basic house necessities. Reports like this should make us all hang our heads in shame. Some eye-opening statistics: The number of children in residential care in England has doubled over the past 12 years. it now stands at over 80,000 children (almost the same amount that is in our prisons) currently in care in England, a number that continues to rise. 70% of children in care have experienced abuse or neglect. 1 in 10 children in England have a diagnosable mental health condition. Call it what you want but continual cuts to vital services have exacerbated the problem. These are services which can prevent crises before they escalate, offering timely support to families and ensuring children can stay in safe, loving homes. Studies have shown that investing in early intervention can save up to £9 for every £1 spent by reducing the need for more intensive services later on. Doesn't every child deserves the chance to grow up in a stable, nurturing environment?

What charities are people most motivated to donate to? This year there has been a shift in the rankings. Children’s charities (46%) is the highest, maintaining a position in the top three since 2016. Mental health has ascended to second place (42%), entering the top three causes for the first time, with the proportion who are motivated to support this cause growing steadily from 29% in 2017 to 42% today. The reason donors might give can change depending on global and local events. For example, disaster response in Australia saw a large spike due to the 2019-2020 bushfires. We are seeing an increase in younger donors being less loyal to one charity, with cause being a key driver to engagement, more so than familiarity with the charity or brand legacy.
