The most common question I get is:
How do you ensure your remote team stays productive and efficient?
I hired my first team member in 2011 (Kiera McFeely 🙌) and added my first remote employee about seven years ago (Tamar Heffernan 🙌)
Today, our #remote team has grown to nearly 80 members, and we’ve developed the systems and structures you’d expect for a team of this size. (Thanks to Nelmari Finlay 🤩)
But it wasn’t always like this.
Starting from scratch meant learning as we grew, we really did build the plane as we flew it!
From the beginning, I’ve always operated from a place of trust.
My instinct is to believe that my team—comprised of highly skilled professionals—will deliver and even exceed client and business expectations.
Has this approach always worked perfectly?
Not entirely—there have been two instances over 13 years where I was let down ☹️
But considering how far we’ve come and the success we’ve achieved, I’d say that’s a pretty good track record.
While systems, processes, and outputs are crucial, whether in person or remote, when growing a business, trust is vital.

I say what needs saying about the Future of Work/Living. I also help teams coordinate remote & in-office Kadences (pun intended, it’s where I work and what we do!).
Insert hook on remote being the best here.
Kidding, let’s talk about reality:
The reality is that most companies can’t and shouldn’t be remote—
But that doesn’t mean they can’t and shouldn’t operate LIKE a remote company.
In other words, build their company around:
- Trust
- Transparency/documentation
- Contributions/outcomes
As if they were a location-less company.

Fully Remote Job Alert for my community of Marketeers - Doist is hiring a Head of Marketing!
I was first introduced to Doist when I attended the Running Remote conference in 2019. I learned about how they were building an incredible business and culture with a fully remote global workforce, including really leaning into async communications while also creating connection and community.
This was eye opening to me as I had just completed 14 years as a marketing and business leader at a 100 year old company that was highly synchronous. I was fully remote for 8 of those years and had been experimenting with different communication and collaboration approaches to enable our distributed team. I loved hearing about how Doist was pushing the boundaries of working across distance.
Over the past few years I have learned even more about how Doist operates through Chase Warrington's generosity in sharing what he's learned as the Doist Head of Remote, and now as Head of Operations.
Click on the link below to learn more about the Doist Head of Marketing job.
Check out the comments for a link to Chase's post about the job that includes even more details about Doist benefits.
Note: I do not work for Doist, so I don't have any more details on the job than what has been shared publicly.

Employee Engagement Improved Through Intentional Workplace Strategy | Executive Consultant + Professional Speaker | Author: Work Better Save the Planet | TEDx Speaker | Pursuing Organizational Development + Change PhD
Have a listen (or read the transcript) to this excellent WBUR episode of On Point featuring Cali Williams Yost. A couple of quotes from Cali: "...if you engage them (young employees) in figuring out, based on the work that you need to do, how and where that work happens best, you will see them become engaged and invested..." And, "...have leadership that opens the process up to everybody ...and instead of asking how do we get everybody back to the office, ask how do we perform at a high level? "
That is key - involving your employees (all generations) in the process so they have ownership, agency, and create a new way of working and new (or reinforced/refined) company culture.
I'm so glad Yost talked about the team having an open Teams channel with their manager in the other state - they can talk, see and hear each other. I've suggested this simple hack to so many teams over the past few years. Technology can support us in new ways of working - we need to be open to experimentation.
Being fully remote has huge benefits for us, but isn’t without its challenges.
The biggest challenge is onboarding new team members - so as we prepare for a new team member joining this week, here are some of our tips for onboarding in a remote world*
1. Face time
Just because you’re remote doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be talking. Make sure your new starter spends plenty of time with both their immediate and more distant colleagues. In their first week they should meet everyone they will regularly interact with, ideally in a setting that is relevant to their role (not just an awkward 5 minute intro). This should make point two easier.
2. Comms at the core of culture
Having a culture where good, open communications are at the heart of what you do will make it easier for new starters to ask questions and get involved, instead of feeling isolated.
3. Set expectations
Be clear on what your expectations are for the first week, month etc, and listen to theirs. If you’re expecting them to spend the first week learning and not contributing any ‘work’ then tell them - there is nothing worse than being sat by yourself feeling that you should be doing more.
4. Nail the boring bits
Sitting at your desk not able to log on is bad enough in an office - digital setup and comms with the team needs to be seamless and have been tested ahead of time.
*These don’t hurt in an in-person world either!
