I enjoy scholarship when disagreement instigates productive thinking. When it comes to using AI in the writing process, "What's all the fuss, says Dr Nick Jackson, Use it to help you come up with an idea, use it to draft, use it to revise and edit, publish, and get on with your day." (paraphrased for brevity) Yes, but what about younger writers? I ask, wondering, in hindsight, if I am being ageist. Will early use of AI as a composition partner constrain anything fundamental that would prevent the greatest amount of expert use later in life? Here's what makes sense to me: 1. An expert writer is someone who can say to the AI chatbot things like, "No, that's not right, try again, that's BS, I totally disagree, etc." An expert writer has more expertise than the AI helper, enough to know when, where, how, and why the AI output is not good enough. And the greater that expertise the more creative the writer will be in putting the AI helper to work effectively. 2. Mostly writers between the ages of 8 and 18 do not have that expertise yet. There are exceptions. 3. Teachers all over the world will come up with absolutely amazing lessons to develop this expertise in their students, sometimes using AI sometimes not. 🌐💡 Reflections on AI in Academic Writing: Upholding Ethical Standards in Research Publishing Recently, a research article caught my attention, sparking a lot of chatter in our academic circles. It wasn't the content that got us talking, but rather how it was written. Turns out, the use of AI tools in academic writing, like in this article, surprised and even amused many of us. This got me thinking: in today's tech-driven world, is it still frowned upon to use AI to write academic papers? Should we stick to old-school methods or embrace new tech that could make our work better? From my perspective, the use of generative AI tools is not inherently unethical. As long as the output aligns with the intended message and accurately conveys the thoughts and ideas of the author(s), it can be a valuable asset in academic writing. However, it is crucial to exercise discretion and ensure that the integrity of the research remains intact. What concerns me most about the aforementioned article is not the use of AI itself, but rather the apparent oversight in the editing and review process. Despite claims of thorough review and editing by the co-authors, a glaring carelessness in the very first line of the paper went unnoticed. This raises questions about the diligence of the co-authors with whom the manuscript was reviewed before publication. The responsibility for maintaining the quality and integrity of published research does not solely rest with the authors; it extends to editors, peer reviewers, and the academic community as a whole. The oversight observed in this instance underscores the seriousness with which articles undergo peer review. As members of the academic community, it is incumbent upon us to uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct in research and publishing. One basic thing you learn developing AI to make decisions is that you need to give training examples on each side of the decision boundary. That's not only true for AI; it's true for decisions in general. Think about that for your classroom, because AI can unlock new possibilities. For example, a key literacy skill is recognizing skilled writing. After all, people need to recognize when their own writing needs improvement. Teachers likely have students read from a bunch of skilled writers. Do they compare those works with a similar story from a less skilled writer? Can they recognize the steps on the way to greatness? Students need to see good work and bad work to be able to fully tell the difference. Who has time to write those variants? GenAI use case: 🤖 My students are planning their use of #GenAI to support writing a persuasive review using ethos, pathos, and logos. The first student handed in her plan and initial thoughts about using GenAI to help her write. The insights she shared were basically exactly what I'd hoped they'd find: 🤖 The potential for ethical issues related to academic integrity and how to avoid them 🤖 The impact of AI on the "authenticity" of the student's work 🤖 She said she felt that using it could become a "crutch" (and I like that she's concerned about that!) 🤖 She wants to develop her own unique writer's voice with writing that offers "nuance." I love the deep thinking! This student is getting it. I'm sensing a benefit from the conversation about this. I provided a template and asked them how they would approach each part of the persuasive writing process using AI strategically with examples. They provided answers (attached the doc to the discussion).
