I’m excited to host an AMA at Stage 32 (stage32.com) today! For the past few years, I’ve been an AI consultant for the film industry, helping to clear up misinformation and navigate an ethical approach to integration so it is a tool and not something that replaces a person. I understand how scared people are and how transformative this technology is. Here are a couple of key points: 1. AI has been around in some form or another for decades. It’s already here. 2. We were just as scared about computer-generated effects. In 1982, Tron wasn’t even nominated for an Oscar because they felt using computers for CGI was considered cheating. 3. When both the internet and streaming came along, we all were freaked out and worried. All of the above changed how our industry operated, but one thing is for sure: those who took control of the technology early on benefited. Knowledge is power, and if we don’t want big studios to make all the decisions, we have to be part of the conversation. Today is a lead-up to my eventual webinar. With all of the pontetial uses of generative AI tools in entertainment, let’s narrow focus to one particular topic… dubbing. Do you enjoy watching dubbed or subtitled films? Some people don’t mind, I’m one of them, however that isn’t always the case. There are plenty of films and tv shows I’d love for friends and family to watch, but they aren’t interested if they’re dubbed or subbed. And you know what… that’s totally normal. We experience language from a cognitive, auditory and visual perspective. So if one of those three elements aren’t intact it can disrupt communication. But what if the visual element of dubbing had perfectly matched mouth movements to the new language? For example - a native German film looked and sounded like it was in English. And what if we didn’t replace localization houses and voice actors, but enhanced the quality of their work? If that sounds good to you, then we agree. That’s the Flawless artist centric approach.

I recently had the opportunity to start making videos for the entertainment news outlet, Collider. For consistency, Collider has chosen to utilize AI for their voiceovers, so I’m getting my head around using ElevenLabs. What I find amusing is that, while these AI voiceover generators are miles ahead of the computer-generated voices of the past, achieving decent quality narration still takes me almost as much time as recording my own VOs! I’m sure AI-generated voiceovers will continue to improve, but there’s something so innately human about the voice that makes it a challenge for computer models to replicate. As a content creator, I love AI tools that allow me to do a myriad of things I would otherwise struggle to achieve due to financial or time constraints. I know many content creators have embraced AI voiceovers because voiceover artists can be expensive. And rightly so—creating good VOs takes time, costly equipment, and overcoming the challenges of acoustics. Sound, in general, is one of the most neglected aspects of filmmaking, but when it’s bad, it’s incredibly noticeable. What are your thoughts? They are very clear that they have used licensed stock audio from Shutterstock as the dataset. My question is how are the engineers that sell their SFX on Shutterstock getting compensated?
