Unveiling my latest paintings, the diptych ‘Para Bellum Si Vis Pacem’. Limited edition prints are available to order now at link in bio for the next two weeks only. These paintings are 3ft x 5ft (91cm x 152cm) each, oil on birch wood. The text up top is custom designed typography screen printed by hand onto the paintings using oil-based ink. One piece, “Para Bellum”, is of the Roman goddess of war, Bellona. The other piece, “Si Vis Pacem”, is of the Roman goddess of peace, Pax. The Romans had an expression “Si vis pacem para bellum”, which means, “if you want peace, prepare for war.” In other words, you have to fight for your rights, freedom, and peace. As an American, there are many things that have been changing over a period of several decades. I’ll go more into detail on my thoughts here in future posts, but it’s plain to see if you notice, for example, how many of our tax dollars we’re sending to fund war crimes conducted by foreign nations while our domestic infrastructure crumbles. Or just how wealthy members of congress get despite having humble salaries. Or how regulatory agencies look the other way if giant corporations lobby them enough. And so on. Did you know that beneath the visible images of works of art, such as paintings and icons, there often lie hidden images? 🎨🖼️ Icon painters frequently painted new images over previous ones that had lost their brightness or were damaged over time. Antique icons may contain multiple layers from different centuries, and painters sometimes left hidden images as different versions of the composition or entirely new pictures. These hidden layers can be key proofs of a painting's authenticity during examination. 🔍 For restoration and authentication purposes, it is critically important to have non-destructive tools that analyze the structure and composition of the paint layers. 🛠️ Various physical and chemical research methods diagnose damage, reveal the structure and number of layers, and identify the chemical composition of paints. This information helps determine authorship and methods of restoration. For example, the painting by Vincent Van Gogh, "Floral Still Life with Poppies and Roses," underwent X-ray analysis due to doubts about its authenticity. The X-ray revealed an underlying layer with another painting of two men. This hidden image was mentioned in the correspondence between Van Gogh and his brother, confirming the still life’s authenticity. 🎨🌟 While IR and UV scanning can sometimes be used, methods based on X-ray technology are the most effective, versatile, and safe ways to "see" inside the coloring layers, separating one from another and revealing hidden images. 🌟✨ #innovations #xray #art #paintings

From van Eyck to Serov, artists have used mirrors to reflect more than just images. Let’s explore seven notable examples: 1. Jan van Eyck’s “Arnolfini Portrait”: The mirror in this painting is a symbol of purity and may reflect a wedding scene or a memorial. 2. Diego Velazquez’s “Las Meninas”: The mirror reflects the royal couple, questioning the reality versus the art. 3. Hieronymus Bosch’s “The Garden of Earthly Delights”: Mirrors show devilish scenes, illustrating sins like lust and pride. 4. He calls these works post-problem art. “Any number of methods or styles would do,” he counsels, as long as the resulting paintings evoke “cynical irreverence toward sincerity or depth” and retain a “knowing” air. “The all-important twist here, the redeeming feature, would be the way in which this work was generated, which would expand in importance, endowing the abstraction with meaning.” Post-problem art would appear tasteful, but “in its apparent lack of concern for traditional skill or labor . . . it would be tasteless.” Another pro tip: “The painting could be based on chance, which obliterated traditional notions of composition and looked kind of punk: accidental stains on canvas, for example. Home is pleased to be exhibiting a series of paintings by Adam Norton in October. Join us for opening drinks on Wednesday the 11th from 6-8pm. Pictured is NUFO 2, 2023, synthetic polymer paint on canvas. “…In 2006 in a show called UFOlogy, I exhibited a series of paintings of ufo sightings sourced from diverse images pulled from the web. Considering the reclassification of evidence coming from US government sources in recent years, I decided it was timely to revisit the subject in a series of ‘New’ UFO paintings, or what I’m calling NUFO’s. What I like about working from UFO sightings is that the images work on a number of levels. From a narrative perspective they are as much about belief as they are about pictorial evidence, the images are almost always obscure, blurry and only a few pixels in length. So from the start viewers are split in two camps, believers and non-believers. From a pictorial position I like that as an artist primarily interested in narratives, I almost exclusively end up using various abstract marks and techniques to recreate the ‘real’ look of a UFO sighting. The paintings cover various styles including impressionism, cubism, expressionism and minimalism. So they become a potted trip through 20th century art movements.
