Help please! I have noticed that many charities find staying on top of governance and risk management difficult. Often, they lack the resources and expertise to assess themselves on their own. And sourcing external assistance can be beyond their financial reach. So, I am launching a new free Charity Maturity Assessment Scorecard to help charities improve governance and risk management. It is simple: answer the questions, receive an immediate score and assessment, and then receive a detailed assessment report. Thanks Paul - really enjoyed this piece. I agree with your points but would add two observations from my personal experience: 1. A key reason management teams struggle to allocate enough time to strategic analysis is that risk management processes / thinking is rarely embedded in organisational business planning and decision making - all too often it is treated as a standalone activity fighting for it's own relevance and air time. 2. If NGOs have a bias toward mitigating the risks to the organisation over those to clients then I would suggest that they haven't done enough work around their organisational risk appetite statement - it's hardly a silver bullet but deep conversations around risk boundaries and trade-offs will ensure that NGOs are more likely than not to get the balance right.
