So it's five years. Today the government made their statement on when BS 476 will be removed from Building Control Approved Doc B. "Withdrawing the National Classes fire testing standards from ‘Approved Document B’ will end the dual classification system that has operated since the early 2000s in favour of the more rigorous, internationally recognised European standard (BS EN 13501). The current testing standard tests for both reaction to fire and fire resistance. I am aware that there are a small number of manufacturers who have only ever tested to National Class standards who will need time to re-test their products. #Misinformation often leads to #misconception. NFPA 72 requires an area of refuge to have a two-way communication (AOR) system under specific conditions. These systems are essential for providing a means of communication between individuals in the area of refuge and emergency personnel. #Location: Areas of refuge are typically required in buildings where occupants might need assistance during an emergency, such as those with disabilities who cannot use stairs. #Building_Codes: The International Building Code (IBC) mandates two-way communication systems in new constructions, regardless of whether the building has a sprinkler system. #System_Requirements: The communication system must comply with sections 24.10.5, 24.10.14, 24.10.2.1, and 24.10.2.2 of NFPA 72, which outline the technical and operational standards. #Survivability: The 2022 edition of NFPA 72 includes new survivability requirements for these systems, ensuring they remain operational during emergencies. In consequence, AOR 2-way communication system are mandatory when ADA and HVI compliant units are located in upper floors, and they shall always have some sort of secondary power source.

Are your fire door standards up to date? The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) is taking proactive steps to address the challenges arising from the removal of the national classes for fire resistance in Approved Document B (England). With the upcoming move towards the European test standards and classification system, Task Group 10 (TG10): Fire Doors, has been formed to help facilitate a smooth transition for stakeholders across the entire fire door sector. Millions of fire doors of all material types are currently supplied and installed in the UK. The removal of the familiar BS 476 protocols and frameworks will add further layers of complexity for the fire door sector, encompassing product development, testing, manufacturing, certification, installation protocols and management of product during its life service. TG10 aims to bridge this gap by facilitating industry and expert collaboration and creating comprehensive and futureproofed guidance for stakeholders involved in fire door safety. This guidance, in the form of a new ASFP Colour Book, will provide: Clear explanations and guidance on navigating the transition from national classes to European fire resistance classification frameworks Best practices for fire door specification, installation, maintenance and management under the new regulations Support for implementing the "Golden Thread" of product information in high-risk buildings, ensuring full and accurate documentation for fire door systems. As we are in full swing of Fire Door Safety Week, it is time to share some key facts to remember when having a fire door on your site 🔥 ❓ Following a recent survey we sent out, we asked certain questions to find out how much people know about Fire Door Safety. 🚪 The first question we asked was: Do you know the difference between FD30 and EI30 fire rated doorsets? 👷 According to our survey, 37% of people who work within the construction industry do not know the difference between FD and EI rated fire doors. 🔥 FD fire ratings are based on Fire resistance testing to BS476-22 and state the duration a doorset or assembly can resist a fire. The ratings are formatted FD30, FD60 or FD120 to indicate how many minutes a door meets the test requirements for integrity and where relevant insulation criteria. The EI rating, standing for ‘Integrity (E) and Insulation (I)’, also indicates how many minutes a doorset or assembly meets the test requirements for integrity and insulation criteria when tested to EN1634-1 and classified to EN13501-2. The 2nd March 2025 deadline for withdrawing BS 476 for Reaction to Fire and roof testing from Approved Document B is fast approaching. You need to ensure you understand this significant change to Approved Document B, and the broad implications it brings across the construction products sector. ➡️ Background to the withdrawal of BS 476 from Approved Document B On 2nd September 2024, the government confirmed that the National Classes fire testing standards would be withdrawn from 'Approved Document B' in favour of the EN 13501 series of European classification standards. At the time, this gave the industry a transition period of 6 months for reaction to fire and roof testing (and 5 years for fire resistance). ➡️ Implications BS 476 test evidence cannot be used to generate a classification using the EN 13501 series of standards: > After 2nd March 2025, if you only have BS 476 reaction to fire or roof test evidence, your product(s) will no longer meet the requirements of Approved Document B. > A new testing programme is likely to be required to classify your current products according to EN standards. > Products may need to be redesigned to provide the required level of performance against the EN test method. There are differences between the BS 476 standards and the equivalent EN methods, which can place different demands on the product in fire test conditions. ➡️ Actions to take We are now just over a month away from the withdrawal period of BS 476 from Approved Document B for reaction to fire and roof products. To ensure compliance and minimise the impact on your business, you should: > Review products and applicable test reports to identify re-testing requirements. > Ensure current and future test programmes are aligned to EN 13501. It is a requirement of SANS 10139 that there is a design certificate issued for each fire detection system, and that it is signed off by a registered competent person. Any deviations from the standard need to be listed on the certificate. This is the person that will be responsible for the design of the fire detection system.
