The ever-evolving landscape of generative #AI poses significant challenges but also opportunities. These challenges require thorough consideration towards pragmatic reflections and reactions to outline an accountable action plan. Recently, some of the most prominent global institutions shared key considerations, guidelines and insights on these empowering technologies. These referrals guide us to navigate through this multi-faceted landscape according to principles of security, innovation and inclusivity, and are reshaping the regulatory scenario. ◼ The European Data Act, entered into force earlier this month (it will become applicable by September 2025), has as its main goal the fair access and use of data. The Data Act complements the Data Governance Act and clarifies who can use data, for what purposes and under which conditions. The Data Act will provide a series of measures devoted to increase legal certainty for businesses and consumers who participate in the generation of data, ensuring the transfer of data as well as its confidentiality. https://lnkd.in/dR8Nef-h ◼ The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently published new regulatory considerations on the ethics and governance of #Large MultimodalModels (LMMs) and their application in the healthcare sector. This document discusses several key points concerning the latest developments of generative AI systems, highlighting six main topic areas including risk management and AI systems development lifecycle approaches, data quality, privacy and cybersecurity, the importance of use cases and benchmarking for validation purposes, the benefits of post marketing surveillance and potential damaging biases that could compromise the performance of AI systems. https://lnkd.in/d-4JfWmu ◼ The World Economic Forum published the "AI Governance Alliance" Paper, an insightful documentation on the rise of Generative AI, its impact, opportunities and challenges of safe generative AI implementation in several business sectors, emphasizing also some ethical concerns. The Paper examined in detail both technical and procedural considerations for the development of AI models, especially expressing the need for a responsible transformation, consistency with definitions and key aspects of an AI-empowered model, the need to ensure global cohesion and trust. Both these two papers pointed out the need for international cooperation and jurisdictional interoperability that might enhance consistency in regulations, safe knowledge transfer and support for countries with low regulatory capacity. An inclusive and open approach might foster socioeconomic development and erase power imbalances in AI governance. https://lnkd.in/dcfeR4nA #togethermovefirst #digitalmedicine #DigitalEu #EuDataAct #LMMs

⚖️Discussions around AI regulations are heating up on both sides of the Atlantic. In Europe, the AI Office extended the public consultation period for the Code of Practice on General-Purpose AI Models until September 18 (see here: https://lnkd.in/eMcXsMbP ). But I will cover this later as I wanted to first dive deeper into 🇺🇸 California's AI Bill SB 1047. Because, yes, surprise, Regulation is not a Europe only thing! 😁 It could have significant implications for the future of AI regulation in the US and potentially worldwide. 1️⃣ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗕 𝟭𝟬𝟰𝟳 𝗜𝘀 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 SB 1047 aims to introduce comprehensive measures to regulate the development and deployment of AI in California, focusing on three primary areas: - 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆: Ensuring that AI systems do not pose undue risks to public health and safety. - 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝘀: Promoting the development and use of AI that respects human rights and ethical standards. - 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: Mandating that organizations disclose how their AI systems work, including details about their training data and underlying algorithms. 2️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 The bill has far-reaching implications for the tech industry and beyond: - 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘆: Companies will face higher compliance costs as they adapt to new regulations. This may especially impact startups and smaller firms that lack the resources of larger corporations. - 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: While increased openness is generally positive, there are concerns about the potential exposure of proprietary information and intellectual property. - 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝘀: The push for ethical AI development could steer companies towards more responsible innovation. However, balancing ethical considerations with business interests will be a challenge. - 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Critics argue that stringent regulations might stifle innovation in Silicon Valley, traditionally a hub for tech advancements. On the flip side, supporters believe that well-regulated AI could foster safer and more reliable innovations. - 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: Given California's prominence in the tech world, the bill could set a precedent for AI policies globally, influencing other states and countries to adopt similar regulations. The tech community remains divided on SB 1047. High-profile figures like Elon Musk have expressed their support, emphasizing the need for caution and responsibility in AI development. Meanwhile, organizations such as OpenAI have reservations California Governor Gavin Newsom has until September 30 to sign the bill or veto it. Next week I’ll talk about EU's #GPAI #CodesofPractice. What’s your take on SB 1047? 👇
