Sea mines still pose a significant threat to shipping and mariners. According to the 1907 Hague Convention, drifting sea mines are illegal. The mines must be neutralised when they are released from their fixed locations. The mine explosion incidents create an indiscriminate threat to shipping. The Joint War Committee of Marine Insurers released an advisory on sea mines in the Black Sea on 31st March 2022 (JW2022-009). The overall situation is defined as unpredictable and dynamic so caution is advised. The solution may be a coalition of the littoral navies mine warfare forces led by the Turkish Naval Forces Command as the most experienced and equipped neutral navy in the Black Sea region.

There are important steps to take during extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, as illustrated by the following incident. During a drilling operation, a reservoir section was drilled to a depth of 30,453 feet using 15.9 pounds per gallon (ppg) heavy emulsion mud weight. Due to an upcoming hurricane forecast, operations were suspended using a storm packer. Kick detection checks were performed, and the well was temporarily abandoned for safety. IOGP Lesson Sharing 24-3: Kick while disconnecting for hurricane suspension. During drilling of 8.5” reservoir section, a hurricane was forecast in the area. While POOH BHA for suspension, a combination of insufficient mud weight and well monitoring on tight drilling mud window caused a swab kick. Well was killed with heavy mud riser cap, in order to accelerate abandonment operations. Back on location, used same well killing operation to control well. Post mortem analysis indicated ESD information did not reach mud engineer, which could help mitigate poor fluid treatment/contamination.
