Our jam-packed SEP experience continued, with our interns getting a wide range of learning opportunities. Recent days included interview prep with Blackstone, property tours at the Wharf, and meetings with on-site property teams. The interns were full of fantastic questions as they learned about real estate projects from every angle.

As a parent, there are moments that fill your heart with pride and a touch of nostalgia. Today, I experienced one of those moments when I saw my son Jake Childers pop up on my LinkedIn feed, celebrating their internship Blue Trust. Watching them grow, learn, and now step into the professional world is incredibly rewarding. It feels like just yesterday they were taking their first steps, and now they’re making strides in their career. This journey has been filled with countless lessons, both for them and for me. Here are a few reflections: 1. Embrace Change: Seeing your child transition from the classroom to the workplace is a reminder that change is constant and growth is inevitable. Embrace it with open arms. 2. Celebrate Small Wins: Every accomplishment, no matter how small, is a step forward. Celebrate these moments to build confidence and momentum. 3. Mentorship Matters: Encourage them to seek mentors and also be one yourself. Sharing experiences and insights can make a significant difference in their journey. 4. Stay Curious: The world is evolving rapidly. Encourage them to stay curious and keep learning, adapting to new challenges and opportunities. 5. Support and Trust: As they embark on their career path, your support and trust in their abilities mean the world to them. Be their biggest cheerleader. To all the parents out there witnessing similar milestones, let’s cherish these moments and continue to guide our children as they make their mark in the world. And to Jake Childers, I couldn’t be prouder of you. Here’s to many more achievements and learning experiences ahead! 🌟 #ProudParent #NextGeneration #InternshipJourney #ProfessionalGrowth #Milestones

Calder Capital Team Spotlight: Riley Hagen, Sell-Side Analyst Riley joined Calder Capital in January of 2024 following his internship with the firm in late 2023. Here’s some fun Q&A with Riley: What are your favorite activities? Anything outdoors. From hiking to snowboarding I enjoy spending my time outside when not in the office. Do you have a hidden talent? I can dunk a basketball. How did you come to work at Calder Capital? I knew about Calder from my time at Grand Valley, and at the time my past employer had a hiring freeze, which allowed me to pursue my passion in M&A. I got connected with the team, had a quick interview process, and the rest is history. What is your favorite memory from Calder? I don't have the plethora of memories that some members of the team may have, but so far one of the best memories was attending a Grand Rapids Griffen's game with the team. It was great to get out of the office with everybody for a moment. What motivates you to work hard each day? I really enjoy problem solving, and although some days can be long and stressful, the satisfaction that comes from this line of work is unmatched. It’s a pleasure to have you on the Calder Capital team Riley! #team #spotlight #teamwork #mergersandacquisitions #investmentbanking #buyingabusiness #businessbroker

Last week the Financial Times published my thoughts on the pressures young financial professionals face at work and the culture of long hours in the industry. As someone with experience in both asset management and education, I’ve seen that critical skills like leadership, decision-making, and resilience can be developed in alternative environments and non-traditional career paths. This summer, I returned to lifeguarding on the Jersey Shore and witnessed firsthand how unplugging and engaging with real-world challenges can shape young people in ways that office-bound internships often can’t. If your student didn’t land a Wall Street internship, don’t worry—there are many ways to build experience and prepare for tomorrow’s challenges. My journey started in Wildwood Crest NJ as an ocean lifeguard then as a history major at the University of Vermont, ending with one summer as an accounts payable intern with a semiconductor company. Eight years before joining Goldman Sachs, I built my financial experience and acumen at two wonderful financial services firm, neither traditional. Like the majority of employees at Goldman, I began as an experienced hire, and found my way to Wall Street after cutting my teeth in Midtown and Main Street. Arriving eight years after graduating college gave me something I didn't have when I left Burlington, perspective. It wasn't much, but it was enough to understand what I wanted in an employer. Although Goldman was a good company, it wasn't for me. So when my former colleagues called and asked if I would be interested in continuing to grow that boutique I started with in 2003 into something bigger, I understood that was the career I wanted. As a friend wrote before me, I realized I wanted to build the ladder rather than climb it. It's not about choosing between Wall Street and the beach; it's about finding experiences that build resilience and character, wherever they may be. You can find the article at the link below. Although the title of the article is the FT's, the thoughts are mine. To the countless parents and students who have reached out to me since publication here and in The Philadelphia Inquirer, thank you. You'll get where you need to be even if it's with some stops along the way. I recommend making the beach one of them 🌊
