The evolving landscape of public transport has brought forth challenges in funding and operational costs. A public transport fare model should align with the mobility system’s objectives, capabilities, and limitations. Despite regional differences, public transport authorities globally share common goals. We discuss here: https://lnkd.in/gaP92MKn #publictransport #mobility #sharedmobility

💡 How do EU citizens feel about bigger and heavier trucks ? The survey of 8.037 respondents, conducted in 9 Member States (FR, DE, BE, AT, IT, PL, HU, ES and RO) revealed that most are unaware of the serious impact of introducing ‘gigaliners’ or ‘mega trucks’ on the road network. After receiving information on the characteristics of these vehicles, a majority considered the use of #megatrucks to be negative, expressing concerns on the impact on road infrastructure, congestion, road safety and noise. A vast majority also consider the promotion of road-rail #combinedtransport as preferable to reduce road congestion and ensure higher safety standards. Yet our Ministers of Transport are likely to allow cross-border circulation of mega trucks which may be introduced under the EU #WeightsAndDimensionsDirective. This will undermine the EU’s ambition to decarbonise the transport sector, work against the intention to promote electrification of road transport and at the same time lead to a #modalshift from rail to road, which contradicts the EU’s proclaimed #GreenDeal goals. Jon Worth points out a very important issue here : the only way to induce lower prices for customers is to have more seats available for sale. And this comes from more rolling stock (with more capacity) and more missions for this rolling stock. So the key element of regulation of railways is to induce private capital into buying extra rolling stock and operate it in a more efficient way.
I can see why reducing track access charges for passenger rail has some sort of appeal, but I am sceptical as to the practical impact, especially short term. European cross-border passenger services at the crossroads In Europe, getting around by train is getting easier. So say the big players in the market. National operators in the international marketplace believe they are on the right track. That sentiment comes from the pages of a report, which has already been presented to European Union Transport Ministers by the Platform on International Rail… https://lnkd.in/ev_neiXw #railindustry #rail #railtech

How can it be justified that there could potentially be all these mega trucks clogging up already busy roads, especially around city centres. The #EUGreenDeal and the move to carbon neutrality seems to have been forgotten?

"Mobility is at the heart of our Union", said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Her mission letter to Transport Commissioner-designate Apostolos Tzitzikostas is aligned with the main priorities of the European Rail Manifesto 'On Track for Europe'. We look forward to working with the new Commission on: ✅ A plan for an ambitious European high-speed rail network to help connect EU capitals and major cities. ✅ Accelerate rail freight as the backbone of net-zero logistics. ✅ A Sustainable Transport Investment Plan. ✅ The deployment of rail’s key digital enablers. ✅ Achieving seamless cross-border rail ticketing by implementing the Open Sales and Distribution Model #OSDM and expanding the Agreement on Journey Continuation. ✅ ... and more! CER Executive Director Alberto Mazzola: “European railways are committed to providing Europeans with better passenger services for all, including high-speed connections between capitals and major cities; digital rail freight operations integrated with other modes, leading to zero-emission European logistics; and reliable, safe, high-speed infrastructure as well as improvements to the existing network through modernisation and digitalisation. We warmly welcome that these points have been taken up in the next term of the European Commission and stand ready to fully cooperate and support the new Commission in achieving these objectives”. Taking its cue from the likes of Germany, the Portuguese government plans to introduce a €20 monthly rail pass to promote greater use of public transportation services. The flat-rate subscription will give commuters access to all urban, regional, and inter-city trains operated by state-owned Portuguese Trains (CP), except for the premium Alfa Pendular service. Prime minister Luís Montenegro first announced the plan in August, though no timeline has been given yet, according to local media reports. The service will cost far less than similar ones in other European countries, such as Germany’s Deutschlandticket, which is priced at €49 a month (from 2025, it’ll go up to €58, though some organisations are calling for a subsidised rate for low-income consumers). The Deutschlandticket — which is now an employee perk at many companies — doesn’t include inter-city trains, but does give holders access to local trains, buses and trams. According to Germany’s stats office, the ticket likely contributed to a 6% year-on-year increase in the number of passengers using local bus and train services in the country in the first half of 2024. And a recent analysis by transport policy think tank Agora Verkehrswende partly attributed a slight decline in car use to the popularity of the ticket, per Clean Energy Wire.
