When the problems arise, the crisis will let us know who you really are 🌊 Everybody believes when things are going up and the way it makes us happy. But when it goes negative, it confirms who they really are. It's often said that adversity doesn't build character, it reveals it. When things are going smoothly, it's easy to maintain a positive demeanor and get along with others. However, during challenging times, true personalities, resilience, and the capacity to handle stress and uncertainty come to the forefront. This can be true in many aspects of life, whether in personal relationships, professional environments, or even in how people manage their finances during economic downturns. It’s in these moments of crisis that individuals and organizations show their true strength and values.

At LEAP yesterday, Daniel Kaplan, Brian Bradford, and I discussed whether DEI efforts are still legal after the Students for Fair Admissions cases last summer: 1️⃣ Yes, you can still have DEI efforts as an employer 2️⃣ BUT, these efforts cannot discriminate based on a protected characteristic 3️⃣ So consider whether your programs comply with laws like Title VII ✔ Aim for inclusive programs: anyone interested in diversity can participate ✔ Improve/expand your pool of applicants for greater diversity in hiring ✔ Focus on your work environment to be an employer of choice ✔ Ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity for success

I've been speaking to a lot of graduates over the past few months, and one question I hear a lot is, "Now what do I do next?" 🤔 Let's be honest, a role in recruitment isn't usually at the top of most people's lists. Some are curious, but most people either aren't fully sure what it entails or might even have a few misconceptions about it. After watching our CEO, Hayley Still, deliver an inspiring alumni speech at Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd, I've been reflecting on how great this field can actually be for new grads!! Many graduates leave university with a specific career in mind, sometimes because it's what they genuinely want, and other times because they feel it's the path they're supposed to take—something that would make their family proud. I truly believe recruitment is an amazing career for graduates. It offers so much opportunity in every area—opportunity to learn more, earn more, and grow both personally and professionally. So, if you're a recent grad wondering what's next, you can watch Hayley's speech at the 47-minute mark here: https://lnkd.in/e-9ZgEgc and learn about her journey from Law Grad to Recruitment Leader. You never know - recruitment might just be the perfect place to start your professional journey!

💡The activity list is reviewed by every single college that uses the common application, just like the main essay! #PrepareApplyAchieve #CollegeConsultant
The Common Application Activity List is often used as a replacement for the resume in the college application. It is a list of 10 activities that the applicant has delved into over the span of their high school experience. It is an opportunity to highlight intellectual curiosities, accomplishments and showcase talent in a contextually rich way. But be advised: You only have 150 characters per entry! Strategy is needed. #October marks National Careers in Student Affairs Month, and it's a moment to reflect on the incredible journey this field has taken me on. I’ll never forget where it all began—16 years ago at my #workstudy job in the Dean of Students Office at Jackson State University. It was there, as a first-gen student and a young Black man, that I discovered my #passion for supporting students and helping them navigate their own #academic and #personal journeys. My work-study experience wasn’t just a paycheck; it became the foundation of my #career and fueled my love for student affairs. As a Black man in this field, I’ve experienced firsthand the importance of #representation and support for students who, like me, are navigating spaces where they may not always see themselves reflected. I am committed to paying it forward, creating opportunities, and making sure students—especially those from #marginalized backgrounds—feel empowered, seen, and supported. Here’s to the profession that has shaped me, and to everyone in the field working tirelessly to create inclusive, equitable environments for students. #TRIO #HigherEducation #BlackSAP #College #StudentSuccess #StudentServices #FirstGen #LowIncome #TRIOWorks #Retention #Persistence #AspiringVPSA #Completion #COE #Belonging #AcademicAffairs #StudentAffairs #NASPA #ACPA #Education #Access #HBCU #NationalCareersInStudentAffairsMonth #BlackMenInHigherEd #JSU

Interesting read and some very good points. There is a high need for more practical career advising in higher education institutions. Graduates need skills to be prepared for the workforce, not just head knowledge on a certain topic.
Love that our LSU Olinde Career Center team gets to be the driver of this work at Louisiana State University. It helps to have buy in from great faculty and staff partners across the campus. https://lnkd.in/gj_6KQJm
