That’s a crucial point! Extending the inlet pipe to the bottom of the tank, or having a dip pipe, is indeed primarily for safety reasons, especially to prevent static electricity-related hazards. It’s essential to understand these safety aspects to ensure proper handling and operation of hydrocarbon storage tanks.
Many assume that extending the inlet pipe of a hydrocarbon storage tank to the bottom of the tank (dip pipe) has process reasons (e.g. well mixing of fluid, reducing the rate of evaporation due to splashing, etc.). While these reasons remain valid, the main reason is due to safety! Splashing and turbulence of a liquid when loading a tank causes additional electrostatic charge generation, and a spark may occur between the pipe and the rising liquid. Extending the line to the bottom of the tank will help to avoid static splashing, thus reducing the probability of having ignition sources within the tank. #hydrocarbon #tank #storagetank #safety #electrostatic #staticcharge #PSM #processsafety #process
