This is Tala, a 1-year-old ginger Domestic Shorthair DSH cat The owner noticed that his third eyelids were suddenly protruding, and he also had diarrhea. During the examination, everything appeared normal with his eyes except for the third eyelids. This condition, along with diarrhea, indicates Haw’s syndrome, which is caused by an imbalance in sympathetic and parasympathetic tone. Increased parasympathetic tone can lead to greater intestinal motility and the bilateral protrusion of the third eyelid. The exact cause of Haw’s syndrome is not well understood, but torovirus and intestinal parasites have been observed in some affected cats. The protrusion of the third eyelid can be symptomatically treated with 1% phenylephrine. However, the condition is usually self-limiting and resolves on its own within 4 to 6 weeks.
