Today's article is published by Nature Magazine. The article covers a study conducted by Jess Bone, Feifei Bu, Jill Sonke & Dr. Daisy Fancourt and has approval from the UCL, and the University of Florida. The study's goal is to see whether or not leisure engagement in older age is related to objective and subjective experiences of aging. "Given the wealth of previous evidence for the health benefits of physical activity, it is unsurprising that this form of leisure was most consistently associated with experiences of aging. The consistent associations between physical activity (sport/exercise, walking for 20 min or more) and a wide range of outcomes eight years later suggest that these activities contain a range of active ingredients that support older adults’ health." Quick Tips for Staying on Track During Half Term Half-term can be a wonderful but challenging time for those of us balancing family outings with personal wellness goals. When we're out and about, it’s easy for our usual routines to slip. So, I thought I’d share a few practical tips that have helped me stay on track while still making the most of these moments with loved ones. Yesterday, we explored Tate Modern in London. It's such a treat to introduce the kids to art and culture – and to squeeze in some extra movement too! Choose the stairs over the lift whenever possible. When visiting museums, my friends and I have a little tradition of always taking the stairs. It's a simple swap, but those steps add up over the day! For those with younger kids or buggies, partners or family members can often help by using the lift while we get in some steps. This week, I'll be sharing more small, sustainable ways to keep on track while enjoying everything half-term has to offer. Stay tuned for tomorrow's tip!

I started beating the drum on this issue, back in 2012 when I worked at Six Senses Resorts and Spas, and it has been a core theme in our design work Nomadic Resorts, now ever the BBC are taking notice. Since those early days the scientific evidence connecting biophilia and mental health has been mounting. As our society suffers from 'Stolen Focus' (see Johann Hari's outstanding book on the subject) time in nature is critical for physical wellbeing and personal regeneration. Chances are Attention Restoration could be a big theme for wellness tourism in the future. 'Exactly why spending time in a forest can have this effect is up for debate, but theories like Attention Restoration Theory and Stress Reduction Theory make the connection between how the human brain has evolved to respond favourably to fractals, which are infinite patterns seen in natural objects like trees, clouds and rivers. In other studies, seeing these fractals have been shown to reduce stress and mental fatigue, and increase feelings of restoration.' #bbc #wellnesstourism #biophilicdesign #attention #focus

Career transition underway! | Public sector to outdoor sector| Inclusion | Engagement | Authentic Leadership | Performance Delivery |
Outdoor Wellbeing and fulfilment. My top tips from "The Outdoor Fix" by Liv Bolton; which includes lots of fabulous people's stories about making the outdoors a bigger part of your everyday life in really simple ways: 1. What's so important that you can't just go outside for ten minutes? (Sophie Pavelle) 2. If you have kids then climb the tree with them! 3. Use free apps to identify wildlife and plants. The three activities I am building into my life to ensure I am present and engaged with my time outdoors: 1. Walk different route each day for at least 30 minutes and do it mindfully. 2. Push through introversion to connect to others in the outdoors through the myriad of outdoor social groups in the UK. 3. Be curious! On hearing a noise in the undergrowth or the canopy; stop, be quiet and use inexpensive binoculars or camera zoom to appreciate what surrounds us. What three things would expand your enjoyment of the outdoors... and it's always to start today!
