Here are some key takeaways from Indigo Ltd's and Spektrix 'Tomorrow's Audience' report, with insights from over 72 organisations:
📣 More than half of cultural audiences in 2023 were first-time bookers.
📣 19.5% of new bookers from 2022 returned in 2023, a rate of reattendance not seen since 2016.
📣 Theatres and arts centres attracted the highest proportion of audiences who were completely new to the arts.
📣 There are significant differences between regions in terms of general socialising habits in new-to-the-arts audiences increased their social activity, whereas a quarter of regional audiences go out less now.
📣 88% of new-to-arts audiences said attending the performing arts increased their wellbeing.
📣 The key motivators for first-time audiences were identified as People, Familiarity and Occasion; the three main barriers were 'not on my radar', 'hard to access' and 'poor value'.

DEIA as Art...a 5 Week Series............................Week 5.
John Leguizamo made me smile yesterday evening. Not because he was comedic relief, but because he spoke from his heart during the 2024 Emmys. This was DEI as Art - in Action - on an international platform.
The celebrated Colombian American Writer, Actor, Producer and Director created clarity around what DEI means for those who try to bastardize its original intent - and he did it with style.
"I'm one of Hollywood's DEI hires...That's right: The D is for diligence, the E is for excellence, the I is for imagination. Everyone in this room tonight has dedicated their lives to diligence, excellence and imagination."
About 3 months before this speech, Leguizamo took out a full page ad in the New York Times advocating for more actors of color to be recognized during the Television Academy's Emmy award nomination process.
Leguizamo used his privilege as a well-known entertainer to advocate for BIPOC entertainers; many of whom he may never meet or never know. And while so many aspects of this work can feel like climbing an ever-growing mountain, his speech is a reminder that there truly are aspects to this work that are easier than others.
Choose to do some things differently. Choose to spend time considering people you might not normally see. Choose to learn more about how you can understand perspectives that are far different from your own. Like Leguizamo wrote in his open letter...
"It's Simple!"

Ready to get your work on the national stage?

3. Works that demonstrate new ways of working, whether that be in the system of touring, innovative partnerships or engagement with presenters and audiences.
4. Works that may be available for touring straight out of season (or other strategies for reducing the call on remount costs).
5. While not an assessment criterion, we strongly encourage applications that prioritise wellbeing and environmental sustainability in their touring strategy.

Celebrating different cultures can be a fun and enriching experience. You could organize activities such as traditional dance performances, music, art exhibitions, cultural workshops, and food tasting. Encouraging people to dress in traditional attire can also add to the festive atmosphere. It's a great way to promote diversity and understanding among different communities.

We’re in Deafblind Awareness Week.
This is the perfect time to reflect on how we can make our services, products, and content more accessible to the deafblind community.
I'm incredibly grateful to Haben Girma for her educational videos that brilliantly demonstrate the essence of inclusion and accessibility. This week, I shared one of Haben’s videos with my organisation, where she talks about her visit to the British Museum.
One statement from Haben really resonated with me: “If you have working eyeballs, use them. If not, tap into your other senses.”
This perfectly encapsulates the spirit of accessibility—leveraging whatever senses we have at our disposal, whether it’s touch, hearing, or sight.
For those of us creating content, it’s crucial to remember that people will engage with your work using the senses available to them. If you’re producing videos, ensure you provide a high-quality transcript and captions. Don’t settle for auto-generated captions (or ‘craptions’ as some call them) that often fall short.
The quality of your transcript or captions should match the excellence of your video because, for some, that transcript or captions is their primary way of experiencing your content.
It reflects the overall quality and care you put into your work.
Let’s make our content truly inclusive and accessible, ensuring everyone can engage with and enjoy it fully! #DeafblindAwarenessWeek#Accessibility#Inclusion#ContentCreationhttps://lnkd.in/gvbD6XuH

#CannesFilmFestival: takeaways from THAT electrifying cover of #ModernLove by French indie pop sensation Zaho de Sagazan 🔥🔥🔥 (just watch it!!!)
Since coming across her performance at the opening ceremony, I've been obsessed ➡️ A pure expression of FEMININE POWER & ENERGY which highly resonates with me as a presenter & MC.
And this is how Zaho does it:
☑️PRESENCE. Fully in the moment, the 'here and now', she is focused on her performance, joy mixed with awe at 'being' there. Every second, minute, is full of possibilities.
☑️ CONNECTION. She looks at people, smiles, nods, sings TO not AT them.
☑️ AUTHENTICITY (embracing your flaws). She's not perfect. Far from slick performance: her general demeanour, posture, starts badly, several mistakes, gets out of breath running around but keeps going. Both brave and vulnerable, she is human, like all of us, so more relatable. It's that reptilian brain of ours: she is not a threat, thus likeable.
☑️ TAKES OWNERSHIP. Zaho doesn't follow the usual codes, starts off stage, within the crowd, takes her shoes off, improvises a few moves in her socks, swirls around like a dervish - bold.
☑️ SENSE OF EXPECTATION. She's slightly unpredictable, what is she going to do next? Enhances engagement.
☑️ CREATIVITY. She is doing it her way. Hard to live up to the legend of #DavidBowie & one of his catchiest songs but she makes it HERS. It's her feelings, her intonations, her interpretation.
☑️ OWNS THE SPACE around her.
❤️LOVE & PASSION. She sings from the heart. It's raw, intense, real.
☑️ HOLDS HER POWER. It's HER performance, she carries the weight of the event's success and all the teamwork behind it, cannot let them down. She's earned that position.
☑️TALENT = natural ability + hard work, mistakes, failures, learning, determination.
☑️ COURAGE. Alone on stage, yet dares to be her own, unadulterated self, generating admiration and respect.
☑️ BEING A WOMAN. In a male dominated industry, uses & expresses all her femininity to offer an alternative to the usual script, it's almost subversive.
☑️ FREEDOM. Zaho lives in a democracy where women can sing, dance, and show their cleavage.
Not everyone is conquered, who cares? She won over the most important person in the room: jury's president #GretaGerwig (#Barbie) - this is actually a tribute to the actress & filmmaker who performed the song in her breakthrough movie Frances Ha.
💯 To me, she absolutely nailed it. It's a beautiful moment, full of grace and energy. Asked my 9-yr old daughter how she felt watching it: "pure happiness."
SUCH IS THE POWER OF AUTHENTICITY

One small addition to an exhibit can have a profound impact.
Adding Capption means eliminating access barriers for low-vision, non-native speaking, senior, and socially anxious guests.
That's a lot of benefit for a simple change. Schedule a demo today to learn more. capption.com#translation#accessibility#exhibits#museum#gallery#experience
Artist and author of “Art+Faith: A Theology of Making” (Yale Press)
People assume that, as an artist, that my goal is to sell my works. That is an outcome, a result of many years of hard work, but that is not my goal. What is the goal? The goal is developing attentiveness and love. Attentiveness and love for what? You may ask. It’s to develop my capacity for empathy toward the broken, forgotten and marginalized (and even discarded) corners. That is why I am most excited for IAMCultureCare (https://lnkd.in/eSWVX2PW) and Embers International’s (https://lnkd.in/ewu5AJH) partnership to create Artist’s Advocacy groups. Artists can bring awareness and care to the forgotten “least of these” people and situations. Art is all about awareness. Art is a gift, not a commodity.
