🔋 🇪🇸 Today, our colleague Dr. Daniele Violato, Head of Synergies, is at the Battery Innovation Days in Barcelona (Spain), contributing to a panel discussion on addressing international competition in solid-state batteries. Daniele emphasised: ➡️ #Batteries are expected to power the next generation of #lowemission commercial #aircraft, contributing to #aviation decarbonisation. However, state-of-the-art batteries currently lack the performance needed to make a significant impact. ➡️ At Clean Aviation, we aim to demonstrate #disruptive technologies at TRL6 by 2030 for #Regional and #ShortMediumRange aircraft entering service by 2035 and achieving -30% GHG emissions. High-performance #batteries will be key for hybrid-electric propulsion systems and non-propulsive systems in our targeted aircraft concepts, as outlined in the revised Clean Aviation Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda. ➡️ R&I efforts must focus on demonstrating #aviationbatteries at TRL6 by 2030, meeting the #highperformance and #aviationsafety requirements for MW-scale hybrid-electric propulsion. Promising technologies like #solidstate batteries could meet Clean Aviation’s ambitious targets. ➡️ Leveraging synergies between EU, national, and regional programmes through aligned strategies, roadmaps, and project activities is essential to accelerate #aviation decarbonisation. This will contribute to #European sustainability, #competitiveness, and technological #sovereignty amid rising global competition, particularly from the US and China. ➡️ Under #HorizonEurope, enhanced collaboration between #BATT4EU and #CleanAviation will be critical to demonstrating safe, lightweight, high-performance aviation batteries at TRL6 by the end of the 2030s. These advancements could also benefit other transport sectors! 😉 Many thanks to the co-panelists for an excellent discussion and to Anna Gumbau Martínez for efficient moderation: • Montse Casas Cabanas, Scientific Director, CIC energiGUNE • Godwill Kader B., Head of Solid-State Battery - New Business Incubation, Umicore • Fanny Barde, Founder & CTO, SOLiTHOR #BID2024 #CleanAviation #BatteryInnovation
