Khairul Aming is not your typical entrepreneur. Instead of just selling bottles of Sambal Nyet Berapi, a fiery chilli sambal condiment that often accompanies many Malaysian dishes, he is redefining what it means to be a great leader. Let us be honest - it easy to throw around buzzwords like "employee engagement" and "company culture". But Khairul puts those concepts into action. When he hit the milestone of selling a million bottles of sambal in August 2022 which earned him RM14 million, his did not just celebrate his achievement. He shared it with his entire team by booking at least 17 chalets at a resort in Malaysia for a two-day staff retreat. Earlier this month, he shut down his factories for five days and took all 100 of his employees on a fully paid holiday to Penang where they were treated to five-star accommodations, sumptuous buffets and given pocket money for shopping These employees were given the time to relax without the usual corporate strings attached - a real vacation with no meetings, no KPIs. What makes Khairul's approach so refreshing is its authenticity, not about PR or trying to look good on social media. And it is no surprise that when he posts about his employee trips or bonuses, the comments section fills up with people wishing they could work for him. Khairul breaks the mold of what we have come to expect from business leaders. This is the kind of leadership we need more of. To me, the Sambal King is more than just Malaysia’s best boss. He has proved that you do not have to choose between being a good boss and running a successful company. You can do both. In the same way that baking a cake requires patience, precision, and the right blend of ingredients, creating a harmonious workplace demands a similar approach. 🍰 Just as every ingredient in a cake has a purpose, every member of a team brings unique skills and perspectives that are crucial to the recipe of success. It's the meticulous attention to detail, the careful balancing of flavours, and the patience to let the process unfold that leads to the magic of a perfectly baked cake. At #amsOSRAM, when we mix diverse talents and foster an environment of mutual respect and collaboration, we create a culture where innovation and engagement thrive. It's about finding the right balance between guidance and autonomy, providing the necessary resources, and then stepping back to watch the team rise, just like a cake in the oven. As Valerie Lee – Senior HR Director – Country HR (Singapore & Philippines) eluded so aptly, we need to celebrate the team's success coming together and continue to encourage one another. So, let's commit to the continuous collaboration of our teams to create perfection, ensuring that each member feels valued and heard. Because when we do, we're not just baking a cake – we're crafting a masterpiece of workplace harmony that's as delightful and satisfying as the most exquisite dessert. Here's to the magic of baking and the art of building engaged and harmonious teams! 🌟👩🍳👨🍳 Video credit: Singapore Chef - Shirley Tan @Miraclemo

Managing Director of OCS Indonesia | I help Companies build their brands | Strategic Transformation | Growth & Value Creation Strategist | EGN Group Chair | The UK-ASEAN Business Council Member | IFMA Member
Leadership and management styles are distinct but interconnected concepts. Leadership focuses on inspiring and guiding a team towards a shared vision, often emphasizing innovation and change. Management, on the other hand, involves organizing and controlling resources to achieve specific goals efficiently. Effective leaders often incorporate elements of both leadership and management styles to achieve overall success in an organization. Our keynote speaker, Pak Tjandra Gunawan Former President Director and CEO PT Bank Neo Commerce Tbk, has extraordinary experiences in transforming Bank Yudha Bhakti from a conventional bank to a digital bank, we know today as Bank Neo. How he dealt with slow work culture, low employee competencies, and quite complicated bureaucracy and how he moved quickly to identify various challenges that were hampering Bank Neo’s business progress are masterclass in leadership. It is a remarkable strategy to share back then how he encouraged the employees to transform based on three pillars, namely improving the quality of human resources, improving work culture and updating the bank operation to adapt to latest technology. Pak Tjandra’s strong leadership and management style by setting the right tone from top and leading by example successfully changed work culture to increase employee productivity and brought Bank Neo at the forefront of digital Bank in Indonesia less than 3 years. He was awarded one of the best CEO in Indonesia from Swa magazine back to year 2023. His credential can be found in his LinkedIn profile. In upcoming EGN Indonesia (Executives' Global Network) Leadership 2 Session, we will learn how a management style significantly influences the organizational culture of a company. The way leaders manage and make decisions sets the tone for how employees perceive their work environment. On the other hand, a more autocratic management style may lead to a culture where employees feel less engaged or empowered. The approach to problem-solving, decision-making, and the level of trust and transparency within the management team all contribute to shaping the overall culture of the company. Therefore, a well-defined and positive management style can contribute to a healthy and productive organizational culture. Let’s hear from Pak Tjandra Gunawan directly his remarkable story how the right leadership and management style can drive positive cultures in organization. We also have our own panel members who will compliment the naratives based on their extraordinary experiences in their company: Pak Satria Djaya (Deputy CEO and Chief Transformation Officer from Nawakara) and Pak Arif Zahari (Deputy Director of Procurement BPJS Ketenagakerjaan). See you next week on 14 March 2024, 4.30 PM - 8.30 PM Jakarta Time, at World Trade Center Tower 3 Mezzanine. Nick Jonsson , Jasper B. , Dona Amelia
