Mentorship is a key part of our mission at Asakura Robinson. By providing opportunities for young minds to learn from industry professionals, we hope to inspire the next generation of planners, urban designers, and landscape architects. We recently had the privilege of hosting local high school students at our Austin office through @aiadesignvoice. We gave the students an inside look at the AEC industry and our company. Our team introduced the students to some of our projects and guided them through a hands-on session to design compositions. Do you know someone who dreams of a career in planning, urban design, and/or landscape architecture? Tag them in the comments below! @aiaaustin

Brilliant article on why landscape architects should gain practical hands on experience during their training. When a designer can physically build their own designs the gap between the designer and builder is bridged, and ultimately makes the designer better at what they do. https://lnkd.in/ebSdfgr7

Urban landscapes carry a heavy burden – between performance goals, attracting pollinators and being Instagram worthy, they must also mitigate heat island effects, while educating and engaging the community. It’s no stretch to say landscape architecture has become a political discipline, with landscape architects the diplomats facilitating collaboration between stakeholders to meet complex goals. And for Principal Jon Hazelwood, the solution to many of these challenges is to encourage practitioners to test and learn, by getting their hands dirty. “Just as architects prototype and test the materiality of their buildings, we, as landscape architects, should embrace the opportunity to engage in more strategic experimentation,” Jon says. 🔗 Read more of Jon’s insights and the way planting trials are helping to build up knowledge and a robust evidence base for our team and clients, in ‘Dirt Under The Nails’ for World Landscape Architecture: https://lnkd.in/gbw_kEfn

Enjoyed a thought-provoking journey as a landscape architect student, exploring how the architecture field approaches ecological principles. In the building design class, I delved into strategies for sustainable buildings, examining concepts like building ecosystems and achieving resource self-sustainability. Excited about applying these brilliant concepts in landscape architecture practices! #SustainableDesign #LandscapeArchitecture #EcologicalPrinciples

How can #landscape professionals contribute to a better world? listen to Dr Bruno Marques president of IFLA International Federation of Landscape Architects in this short video #iflaworld #ifla75 #landscape #positiveimpact
Dr Bruno Marques, a senior lecturer in landscape architecture at our Wellington Faculty of Architecture and Design Innovation, weighs in on whether landscape architects are just fancy gardeners, how to use nature and design to help with mental health, and if landscape architecture could be used to solve the problems of today.

Strategy-oriented planner and designer with excellent project management and team leadership skills.
I feel conflicted on whether design guidelines for limiting wildfire risks helps address the existing problems of the urban-wildfire interface or facilitates the spread of the problems. Shouldn't we put our attention (and disaster recovery money) towards improving housing options and livability in existing urban areas and reduce the spread of suburban-style development into forests and other fire-prone natural areas? Does anyone know if the American Society of Landscape Architecture has a policy statement on the urban-wildfire interface?
16% of Americans now live in “designated fire hazard areas,” states SWA, a landscape architecture firm. And nearly 80 million U.S. properties face a “significant chance of exposure” to wildfires. Risks to both people and property are expected to dramatically increase by 2050. To address this threat, SWA created an illustrated guide — Playbook for the Pyrocene, which offers 20 community planning and design strategies that can be applied by landscape architects, planners, homeowners, and developers.
