Although the survey had a commercial focus, we heard from many respondents about protecting and promoting our natural resources like Lake Champlain and the Saranac River. Many respondents are looking for entertainment venues, and multi-use spaces. There is also a clear demand for commercial development that will continue to elevate our employment options in the region. And of course, the demand for housing cannot be overstated. Considering a survey for your community? Here are some things to keep in mind: Your community survey should be focused and not include “everything but the kitchen sink”. Communities often fail to recognize the deep connections between parks, trails and open space and the local businesses that benefit from serving the recreationists drawn to these outdoor amenities. That's why we love this data point (and asking the deeper questions it obscures). Each year, an average of 14,730 recreationists visit Forry's Drive-In for ice cream, burgers and fries before or after they spend some time swimming, camping, fishing or boating at Gifford Pinchot State Park, located in York County, Pennsylvania. If each customer spends a minimum of $5 (and most probably spend more), that amounts to $73,650 in revenue for this small, independently owned business. That's nothing to sniff at. But, alongside celebrating the significant economic impact, we can also ask more critical questions. For example, why are 30% of Pinchot State Park visitors people of color, while an overwhelming 90% of park patrons visiting Forry's white? Why are Black, Hispanic, and Asian families less likely to visit Forry's than the state park itself? From a equity and inclusion perspective, we want to recognize and address the often-unseen (but sometimes very obvious) barriers keeping non-White families from patronizing local businesses and feeling welcomes to the gateway communities that host parks and trails. And from an economic perspective, our businesses are missing out on a significant portion of patrons because--unfairly or not--they are perceived as unwelcoming to people of all backgrounds. ~THE HUMBLE NEIGHBORHOOD PARK~ These are not your grand city parks or parks that are seen as local destinations. These are not the parks you might think about when you consider city heritage and identity. But the humble neighborhood park is so precious and a network of such parks woven equitably through communities is the need. Many people (especially those with the flexibility and ability to whiz all over the city for leisure) don’t consider how significant the well-designed yet humble neighborhood park is. I often reference such parks in my workshops and talks with people and not uncommonly will hear the response ‘Oh that’s not a REAL park’. These are indeed not your sprawling, impressive and majestic urban parks but they are important all the same and in fact critical in the face of changing climate, hotter summers and considering inclusive access to green space for ALL urban inhabitants. If you spend any time in such a park and just take a moment to quietly observe the use of public space, you understand the great value of such space for local communities. Consider young children having access to a nice playground near their home. Consider parents and caregivers to young children, also looking to let off some energy and spend some time outdoors close to home. Consider disabled people who might not have the ability to travel halfway across the city for some time in a park. Consider elderly and retired people, many whom live very neighborhood-based lives and appreciate the opportunity for time in pleasant green and outdoor public space. But really consider everyone. Inclusive, accessible outdoor public spaces should be an imperative in 21st-century urban development (should have also been in the 20th century). With issues of urban heat in particular challenging cities across the world, the value and important role of the humble neighborhood park cannot be overstated. 📷 Reel: this past long holiday weekend I lost track of how many neighborhood parks we moved through and spent time in.
