We're thrilled to share that Portland, ME has introduced new "bird-friendly building and design" requirements, setting a precedent for future constructions and renovations! These regulations are designed to significantly reduce bird mortality from collisions with buildings, a vital step towards more wildlife-conscious urban planning. Key Points: -Applicable to new constructions or renovations over 10,000 sq ft -Mandates the use of materials with a maximum threat factor of 30 to minimize visibility issues for birds. -Specific focus on areas up to 75 feet above ground and adjacent to green roofs. This initiative not only highlights the importance of integrating environmental considerations into architectural designs but also paves the way for more sustainable and responsible urban environments. Let's build a safer, bird-friendly future together in our city!

Boston is setting a groundbreaking example for cities worldwide with its "Resilient Boston Harbor" plan. Led by Mayor Martin J. Walsh and visualized by SCAPE Landscape Architecture DPC, this visionary plan reimagines Boston's 47-mile shoreline as a bastion against rising seas and extreme weather, all while enhancing urban green spaces and accessibility. From strategic flood walls to the rejuvenation of public spaces, each measure is a step towards a future where urban landscapes are both resilient and vibrant. As Boston prepares for the challenges of rising sea levels and extreme weather, this plan is a testament to the power of foresight, collaboration, and innovation in urban planning. It's a call to action for cities everywhere to consider their relationship with nature and the legacy we leave for generations to come. Have you seen similar initiatives in your city? How are communities around you preparing for the impact of climate change? Farrells has long been a proponent of 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝟏𝟓-𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬. We believe that 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞. In various 𝐅𝐀𝐑𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐋𝐒 𝐃𝐈𝐀𝐋𝐎𝐆𝐔𝐄𝐒, the effectiveness of 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 urban planning, which integrates 𝐦𝐢𝐱𝐞𝐝-𝐮𝐬𝐞, 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞, has been emphasised in creating a 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐮𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥. A comparative analysis between London and Hong Kong reveals that the spatial configuration of a city can have a significant impact on its energy usage and carbon footprint. Denser and more compact urban environments can be integrated more efficiently with mass transit systems, resulting in significantly reduced transport energy usage. A 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 that is flexible enough to adapt to changing socio-economic conditions provides a logical foundation for modern urban organisation. However, 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐮𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐦 can only thrive when this design is coupled with 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐮𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚 𝐦𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞, 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲. #FarrellsArchitects #Architecture #UrbanDesign #Mixeduse #TOD #sustainability #transport
