🩸It's haemochromatosis awareness week 2024!🩸 Aside from being hard to say ... haemochromatosis is an inherited condition which, in short, causes a build up of iron in the body. If left untreated it can severely damage the liver, heart, joints and pancreas, leading to liver cirrhosis and cancer, arthritis and heart failure. Sometimes called the "celtic curse", as it is particularly common in those with a celtic background, the early symptoms of haemochromatosis include chronic fatigue, weight loss, weakness, severe joint pain and swelling in the hands and anxiety. There is no cure - but it can be treated with regular venesections, to reduce iron levels within the body - and you can help manage it on a daily basis by trying to avoid Vitamin C supplements, alcohol and breakfast cereals (and other foods) fortified with iron. If you have been experiencing the above symptoms, speak to your GP about getting a blood test to check your serum ferritin and transferrin saturation (Tsat) levels - if they are higher than the normal range, you can request a blood test to check if you have the genes for genetic haemochromatosis. Early diagnosis really does save lives - so don't delay and speak to your GP or Haemochromatosis UK if you have concerns 😊 #earlydiagnosissaveslives

But here's where it gets interesting: Chronic infections can disrupt this delicate balance. When viruses invade our cells, they manipulate our genetic machinery, causing the nucleolus (the cell's "manufacturing plant") to enlarge and engulf parts of the X chromosome. This leads to the overproduction of harmful proteins, triggering autoimmune responses.
