A TV ad for the alcopop ‘Metz’ from the much lauded and sadly missed agency, HHCL. https://lnkd.in/e7-UeVZU I’ve always been grateful to three people for teaching me, as a humble strategist, the true value of craft - Paul Jordan, Clare Donald and Chris Groom. How the right music, editing, casting, set or pacing can turn a brilliant idea into an unforgettable one. The dissolve transitions on this, the arri cameras...oh, swoon....I think this was al young, but someone might tell me otherwise. And while I'm swooning. That endline. That v/o. That beautiful pace. Oh, it’s a marvel. This ad is a masterclass. It bears watching repeatedly to marvel in the detail. Some call outs go to Enda Mccallion for the directing, Glassworks for production and finally the immenseness that is that alicia suszka-fielder voice-over. And if nothing else, let us applaud a brilliant, empowering and inspirational client who could give an agency this level of licence to execute something so unique. MYSTIC 🐉 WARRIORS Accounting, Shamanic When I first met my new friend from Oregon, Meghan, I was immediately captivated by the unique blend of her professional and spiritual identities. Fusing her strengths as an ACCOUNTANT and SHAMAN, she embodies a fascinating juxtaposition of the analytical and the mystical. Her life’s ethos bridges these two worlds in ways that are both profound and inspiring. I immediately appreciated her approach, which seamlessly integrates the precise world of accounting with the deeply intuitive practices of shamanism. ACCOUNTING, often perceived as a purely technical discipline, takes on a deeper dimension when examined through the lens of SPIRITUALITY. ACCOUNTING, at its core, is about EQUILIBRIA or BALANCE—both literal and metaphorical. It ensures that financial transactions are recorded accurately, mirroring the equilibrium of economic activities. Approaching ACCOUNTING as a form of EMOTIONAL ACCOUNTING, a concept developed by John Gottman (b. 1942), allows us to view financial interactions in a new light. Gottman’s idea of emotional BIDS—where positive responses are deposits and negative responses are withdrawals—translates seamlessly into financial interactions. Positive financial practices—whether they involve transparent dealings, ethical investments, or mindful budgeting—serve as deposits into our relational and emotional bank accounts. By maintaining this balance, we foster stronger, more resilient relationships, both personal and professional. Similarly, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche (1939-1987) introduced the SPIRITUAL WARRIOR concept, and in his “Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior” Trungpa envisions the spiritual warrior as someone who engages with the world courageously and with wisdom, integrating inner strength with outward action. This perspective of congruence navigates the world by balancing the analytical and the mystical, the material and the spiritual. By merging ACCOUNTING with SHAMANIC practices, we honor the flux in all aspects of life, embodying a more natural flowing approach to financial and spiritual well-being. From this synthesis, we recognize that ACCOUNTING transcends mere balance sheets and profit margins. Through total stakeholder perspectives, accounting becomes a reflection of our PURPOSE, VALUES, ETHICS, and SPIRITUALITY. By embracing the analytical rigor of ACCOUNTING and the profound insights of SHAMANISM, we can more fully embody the spirit of the MYSTIC WARRIOR. Amazing to read this. So much of it resonates with my experience working with early stage companies. Quite often when companies get funding suddenly there are a few more “adults in the room” that founders think will make the right calls for the company. Quite often that doesn’t end up being the case - Founders need to very much stay in the driving seat to ensure those around them are executing at a high level - Anything less can spell doom. #leadership #management #founders #headcount #talent #foundermode

Such a great point by the one & only 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝗹 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗺 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝘃𝘀. "𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿" 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲. Couple of thoughts about this: 1. Most people whether they are founders or working in a regular companies 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴. When you try to just "manage" people in a leadership position, it's not effective for yourself as a leader and for your organization. 2. I think the "Founder" Mode that Paul Graham is talking about is a subset of "Leader" Mode. But the 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗽𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽. That's why the generic leadership books and advices aren't really effective for startup founders. 3. This "Founder" Mode may be applicable to leaders of companies beyond startups, though, as Paul Graham noted with the example of Apple. In my early days at Apple between 2002-2007, what surprised me the most was how top execs (such as 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿) would email me, a mere MarCom manager sitting in Korea, to ask a specific question about Korea. Steve Jobs used to reply to emails from customers about iPhone or iPad. 4. I think some specifics 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 "𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿" 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 are: • Being 𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 between 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 & 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻; better yet, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 & 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 • Willingness to 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 • 𝗔𝗴𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 as needed • 𝗔𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 to employees, customers, competitors, and advisors • 𝗔𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 to employees founders delegate • Trying to make the "𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻" based on the available data, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 "𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻" • 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀 and be responsible for the result, whether it's good or bad • 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 including their own opinions Founders - what else do you think the Founder Mode entails?

You cannot hire "good people" and leave them to do their job as they want in a startup. This is because their "job" has many definitions and implications across different areas, solutions, and values. Also, employees might not have the same mindset with the founder as the idea-values progenitor, it is therefore on the founder to make sure that it is enforced. FOUNDERS MODE! However, this differs from MANAGER'S MODE where the company is already established with values, mission and proofed standard documented procedures that are duplicated and passed on across any generation. So here, you don't even have to tell employees what to do because they have a proofed handout, or many case studies to consult.
